Memories for Gertrude

From: Chase Naslund

I truly don t know who I would be if this great lady hadn t been a part of my life.

I spent many days and nights at Grandma s house while growing up. One night, I overheard her praying before bed she was praying for her family, each family member individually. I m not sure how old I was, but hearing Grandma pray for us had a tremendous impact on me. There is something sweet but yet powerful about a woman praying for her family; perhaps it s the ultimate form of nurturing performed by a Mother and Grandmother. Growing up I often thought my good fortune and obviously undeserved blessings came because Grandma was praying for me. God answers prayers and I believe he answered hers often. It was from my wondering what would happen when Grandma could no longer pray for me that helped to drive me to a faith in Christ. This is perhaps faulty theology; but its how my story reads none the less.

Grandma was a lot like Silverstein s Giving Tree . I can t help to read that story and not think of her. She was the tree and I was the boy; she gave and gave . Her love has impacted my life in so many ways. I m not sure who I would be without her.

Thank you Grandma for everything.

Love,
Chase, Jessica, Zachary and Abigail

Sincere condolences from the Philbrook family back in NY State. My dad, Aunt Ethel's brother Clifton, passed away on 3/3/2000. My mother, Winnie, is 91 and living in senior housing near me. Her health is good except for her eyesight.
