Memories for Gertrude
From: Chase Naslund
I truly don t know who I would be if this great lady hadn
t been a part of my life.
I spent many days and nights at Grandma s house while growing
up. One night, I overheard her praying before bed she was praying
for her family, each family member individually. I m not sure
how old I was, but hearing Grandma pray for us had a tremendous
impact on me. There is something sweet but yet powerful about
a woman praying for her family; perhaps it s the ultimate form
of nurturing performed by a Mother and Grandmother. Growing up
I often thought my good fortune and obviously undeserved blessings
came because Grandma was praying for me. God answers prayers
and I believe he answered hers often. It was from my wondering
what would happen when Grandma could no longer pray for me that
helped to drive me to a faith in Christ. This is perhaps faulty
theology; but its how my story reads none the less.
Grandma was a lot like Silverstein s Giving Tree . I can t help
to read that story and not think of her. She was the tree and
I was the boy; she gave and gave . Her love has impacted my life
in so many ways. I m not sure who I would be without her.
Thank you Grandma for everything.
Love,
Chase, Jessica, Zachary and Abigail
