Gary and I both graduated in 19955. Gary from minot High and i from St. leo's. I played basketball against gary and whenever we beat minot High we would generally get the next day off from school. It was a very big to beat Gary and the team from Minot High. I never had much contact after high school with Gary but had occasion to visit with him during my visits to his neigbor and my cousin Mike Nelson. Gary will be remembered for all of his good works and will be missed by many.

Judge Holum will be sadly missed in the Minot community. He was never seen without a smile on his face, and if he knew you, no matter who you were, you were always met with a warm greeting and handshake. He always spoke with such high regard for his wife Joan, and with great pride for his family. Our community is a better place because he was a member of it. Our deepest sympathy to the family of Judge Holum.

Joan and Family....

I simply loved Gary. As a teacher, association leader and administrator in the Minot school system, I also appreciated Gary's concern and support for kids, teachers, school employees and the entire school system. He was a thoughtful and caring school board members. He was the same as a judge. He loved his family, his community, the Hostfest and his heritage, and people. What a legacy he has left. In your sadness, may all of this and more sustain you.

To the Holum family, May God hold you in his arms at this time in your lives and comfort you. Gary was a wonderful man and having worked with him in law enforcement I had a very high regard for him as a professional in the court and as a friend outside of the courtroom. No matter where I was, Gary was always a friendly face and greeted me with a smile. God bless each of you

Joan and family--We are so sorry for your loss and extend our love and sympathy to you. Gary was a classmate of Marvin and he remembers how wiell he played basketball in 1955 and won the championship. We remember your family sitting for service at First Lutheran down near the front on the west side of the church. Thats where we always sat too. Kids always behaved better sitting down so close to the front. Marvins folks who worked at the Court House for 13 years always thought the world of Gary too. He was one great guy and will be missed very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Marvin and Sylvia Domsten

So sorry to hear of your loss. There are so many memories going all the way back to grade school and confirmation. I remember especially the High School reunion, class of 55, in 2005. We will praise Him

From: Hermod and Bjorg Monsen

Dear Joan,

Our deepest condolences to you in connection with Gary's death! We felt so sorry to hear he had passed away.

We both feel we had some real good friends in you and Gary! Gary was a fantastic man and always when we met him he met us with two open wide arms and a big hug! It has been so good to get to know you two.
When we said goodbye to you in June here in Norway we expected to see you again another time here in Skien, in August. It shouldn't be like that, and you both were missed when Carrol Juven visited Skien in August with his group. We also hoped to meet you both at Hostfest in October, but we certainly hope to see you, Joan when we are in Minot at the Hostfest.

We will think of you both tomorrow.

Love from Bjorg and Hermod

From: Mary H. Lay

Dear Joan and Family,
Tom and I are so sorry to hear of your loss of Gary. What a fine, decent man he was. What an example he has set for many of us... as a volunteer, a father, a Judge, a husband and a Christian. Both of you have been so kind and wonderful to our family. Especially remembered will be how supportive you were to our Mother after our Dad died and after Norman's death. Our Mother always spoke so highly of you, Joan and Gary. His loss it too soon and I know you will miss him greatly. I hope you will turn, as our Mother did as a widow, to your friends and family for support and encouragement. Turn too, to Our Lord and Saviour for comfort.
God Bless,

Joan & family:

Gary was a public servant in the truest sense of that term. Above all, he was a very genuine person. On the professional side, it is a compliment of the highest order that he achieved the lasting respect of his colleagues on the bench, attorneys, litigants, court staff, and members of the general public during his long and distinguished career as a judge.

He will be greatly missed.

Peace be with you.

I had the pleasure of working with Judge Holum in the early 80's. What an interesting job it was - from issuing marriage licenses to being a witness at a marriage ceremony. I appreciated Judge Holum's sense of humor, sense of duty and respect for those who found themselves in his courtroom. He was personable and truly cared about others. I deeply respected him. I know many others felt the same. My deepest sympathies to the family.

Joan and Family,

You are in our thoughts during this most difficult time. Gary was an active participant in Minot and set the standard for volunteerism. From Kiwanis pancake feeds, PTA, After Prom parties and even the kids Minot Daily News paper routes, Gary was always there. You can all be very proud; he left this world a better place. Gary was very proud of you and the kids and would always let me know where they were and what they were doing when I would see him. He would just light up. Joan, I know this is a difficult time. You and your family will be in our prayers.

My deepest sympathies and condolences to you Joan, and your children Tom, John and Jane.

I did not have the pleasure of meeting your husband Gary, only your wonderful son Tom. After reading the the Minot Daily News article, and the obituary, it's very obvious to me where half of Tom's incredible personality comes from (half from you too of course). Gary sounds like an incredible husband, father and friend. Truly good people are so rare, and it sounds like he is one of them. I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

And thank you for Tom, he is an incredible human being and I am so blessed to have him as a friend.

Susan
