Ellen Benell Zook 1916 - 2002 Ellen Benell Zook, 85, Minneapolis, MN, formerly of Surrey, died Sunday, November 10, 2002, in a St. Paul nursing home. She was born December 13, 1916, in Surrey, ND, to D.E. and Helena (Wertz) Benell. She was reared and educated in Surrey and graduated from Surrey High School. Ellen contracted Polio at the age of 16, which caused physical disabilities throughout her life. Following graduation she attended Minot State Business College for two years. Ellen owned and operated Northwest Bible House in Minot for a number of years. It was located in front of Calvary Church, which she was a founding member. Ellen and her sister, Mrs. Art Wenz and a friend, Mrs. Jesse Weiss, sang as the Calvary Trio on a 15-minute radio program for a time. On September 28, 1947, she married Thomas E. Zook at her parent's home in Surrey. They made their home in Surrey where they owned and operated Zook's Grocery Store. Ellen was the Postmaster in Surrey for over 30 years, retiring in 1974. Her husband died on October 17, 1977. Ellen continued living in Surrey until 1981 when she moved to Kansas to live near her son Tom. When her son died in 1994, she moved to Minneapolis to be near her daughter Ann and her husband Dennis. She lived in the Minneapolis area until the time of her death. She was a lifetime and very active member of Calvary Alliance Church, Minot. She loved to entertain and when she retired, she spent a lot of time with her grandchildren and family. Survivors: daughter, Ann Stumbo and husband Dennis, Minneapolis; grandchildren, Michael Stumbo and RoxAnn Stumbo; great-grandchildren, Joshua, Michaela and Tyler Stumbo; brothers, Edward Benell, Littleton, CO and Robert Benell, Sun City, AZ; sister, Dorothy Wenz, Hesston, KS and many step children and step grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E.; son, Thomas David; parents; sisters, Gladys Roupp, Myrtle Elsberry, Nellie Pederson and Bessie Eigsti. Funeral: Saturday, 1:30 p.m. at Calvary Alliance Church, 715 20th Ave. NW, Minot. Visitation: Friday, from noon until 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
