Lizzie Zarek • 1915 - 2010 Lizzie Phyllis Demchuk was born June 23, 1915, in a sod house in rural Butte Township of McLean County. She was the daughter of George and Nellie (Nahorney) Demchuk. She attended a country school and graduated from Butte High School in 1933. After high school she spent three months in Chicago doing housework for a local family. The wages were $5.00 per week at that time. Missing her family, she moved back to North Dakota and lived with her parent’s on the farm. Lizzie married Nick Zarek September 3, 1936. They were married at the court house in Washburn, ND. They made their home with Nick’s parents, Emon and Christina Zarek, until the spring of 1937, when they moved to a farm they rented. This farm is the present farm where their nephew, Wallace Demchuk now resides. In the spring of 1941, they purchased their own farmland six miles southwest of Butte. Lizzie resided there until 1975, when she moved to the same house in Butte, which was where her parents lived until their deaths. Since 1999, she has been living at Trinity Homes in Minot, where many of the staff had become like a family to her. Nick passed away November 18, 1970. Lizzie was a member of the Butte Seventh-day Adventist Church. She had a kind and quiet spirit that attracted many friends and was devoted to her family. Surviving family includes: daughters, Adeline Hudz, Redding, CA, Carol (Norton) Berg, LaPorte, MN, and Lynn Zarek Scott, Butte, ND; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Williams, Mission Viejo, CA; sister-in-law, Margie Demchuk, Longmont, CO;
