Raymond Zacharias 1913 - 2002

Raymond Zacharias, 89, Bowbells, died Tuesday in a Stanley care center.

He was born May 21, 1913, in Oshkosh Township, near Canby, MN to Andrew and Esther (Ferm) Zacharias. In 1916, he moved with his family to the Bowbells area. On June 20, 1934, he married Sylvia Rogers. They lived and farmed North of Bowbells until the late 1940's when they moved into town. Raymond established and operated the Bowbells Blacksmith Shop and stayed active in the business until ill heath forced him to retire. He was one of the last original businessmen in the Bowbells area. His wife died in 1997. He continued living in Bowbells until July 2002, when he moved to the Mountrail Bethel Home in Stanley.

Raymond was well known for his gardening and especially his potatoes, which he sold to people in the Bowbells area. He loved to cook, can and bake and even knew how to sew and crochet. In earlier years, he spent time as a volunteer on the Bowbells Rural Fire Department.

Family: three grandchildren, Dena (Joe)Blaker, Shawna (Nolan) Buffi and Steve (Lisa) Zacharias; one step grandchild, Bradley (Allison) Zacharias; six great-grandchildren, Kailee Blaker, Brandon Pankratz, Laura Zacharias, Alyssa Buffi, Ty Zacharias and Rylee Buffi; daughters-in-law, Julie Zacharias and Susan Jessen and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia; sons, Raymond Zacharias Jr., and Steven Zacharias; granddaughter Linda Zacharias; parents; seven sisters and two brothers.

Memorial Graveside Service: Thursday, August 8, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at Bowbells Cemetery.
