Vernon O. Wunderlich, 76, 416 2nd St. West, Velva, ND, died Saturday, October 11, 2008, in his home surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Vernon was born September 18, 1932, the youngest of five sons to Walter and Esther (Bartz) Wunderlich in Velva, ND. He attended grade school in Olivia Township and graduated from Velva High School in 1950. He remained home to farm with his father and brother, Glenn.

On September 2, 1951, he married Eunice Holte of Voltaire. They made their home south of Voltaire where he continued to farm. In his spare time he did carpentry work with long time friend, Ernest Knutson.

In 1975, he became part owner of the Velva Implement. Soon after, he bought a semi truck and was able to utilize it by hauling machinery for the implement and grain for farming.

Farming was very important to him. He was a true farmer; he couldn't wait to get in the field in the spring and then watch everything grow. Harvest was always a special time, especially when his daughters would take turns riding the combine with him and bringing him lunch. Later his two granddaughters, who were very special to him, also enjoyed the ride in the combine.

In 1995, he moved into Velva and continued to farm until being diagnosed with cancer in the spring of 2004, when many trips to Mayo Clinic were made.

He drove school bus for a time, served on the Velva School Board, Voltaire Farmers Elevator, McLean McHenry Insurance Board, Velva City Council, McHenry County Crop Improvement, was a past member of the Velva Lion's Club, life time member of Minot Elks Club, the 7th District Republican Executive Board, Oak Valley Lutheran Church and past member of the Oak Valley Lutheran Church Council.

He enjoyed all school sports and activities and liked working his yard. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family as they were all very important to him.

He will be missed greatly by his family.
