Richard Wilkes 1944 - 2010 Richard “Dick” Clarence Wilkes was born January 28, 1944, a son of Clarence and Elsie (McGillivray) Wilkes, in Fargo, ND. He was raised in Bowbells, ND, graduating from Bowbells High School in 1962. As a young adult, he assisted his parents with the operation of the family farm. Dick then attended Minot State College, where he received his B.A. degree in History Education. Following his graduation, he taught school in Flaxton, Tolna, Sherwood, and Oberon, ND. He then drove truck for Jim Bohl in 1972 to 1973. Dick then attended Law School at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND. He graduated with a Law Degree in 1974. He then began practicing law in Minot and worked as an Assistant States Attorney for the Ward County States Attorney Office from 1976 to 1983. He then worked as an Assistant States Attorney for the Burke County States Attorney Office from 1984 to 1991, and was elected States Attorney for the Burke County States Attorney Office from 1991 to 1994, and from 1998 to 2004. From 1993 to 2004, he had his own private practice in Kenmare. He was baptized and confirmed at the E.U.B. Church in Bowbells, and had attended the United Methodist Church in Bowbells for a time. He had a good sense of humor and was very knowledgeable of history. He enjoyed reading, hunting, and watching television. Surviving family includes: his aunts, Gladys Bunker, Bellingham, WA, Jessie (Keith) Ahrens, Bellingham, WA, and Polly (Bill) Zinninger, Minot; and numerous cousins.
