Angelus (Ann) Widdel 1913 - 2011

Ann Widdel photoAngelus (Ann) Widdel, 97, Minot, died Monday, January 10, 2011 in a Minot hospital.

Angelus Charlebois was born on September 14, 1913, a daughter of Ellen and Arthur Charlebois in Bismarck, ND. She was raised in Minot and graduated from St. Benedicts Academy High School, St. Joseph, MN.

On January 25, 1934 Angelus married Henry O. Widdel. Following their marriage, they farmed in Freedom and Willis townships, south of Minot. Henry died April 29, 1987. Following his death, Angelus continued to live on the South Prairie farmstead until moving to Minot in 2005.

Angelus was an active community member and participated in various roles in the Ward County Farmers Union, South Prairie Homemakers, South Prairie 4-H, and the League of Women Voters. She was also a life-time democrat, begrudgingly admitting to crossing the ballot only twice.

Angelus was a charter member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot, and member of the St. Ann’s Altar Society. She blended her faith into daily life while imparting practical advice to her children such as, “say the rosary when you’re on the tractor, it’s a good use of your time.”

Angelus enthusiastically supported education and cultural understanding by hosting several individuals from South America and Japan through international exchange programs.

She enjoyed all aspects of the farm life and focused her energies on family-centered activities that often required an extended table. She welcomed unexpected guests at dinnertime and shared her belief that, “there’s always room for another place at the table.”

She was a role model mother and grandmother.

Angelus is survived by: Son: Mark Widdel, (Susan) Andover, MN. Grandchildren: Mary Geyer (Craig), Minot; Amy Tuchscherer, Auburn, WA; Paul Widdel, New Brighton, MN; Alex Widdel, Andover, MN. Three great-grandchildren and a sister: Olivia Higginbotham (William), Bellflower, CA.
