Dale H. Wasson, Sr. 1931- 2011

Dale Wasson, Sr. PhotoDale H. Wasson, Sr., 79, longtime area resident of Velva, ND, died Thursday, February 17, 2011, in his home, with his son’s Randy and Dale, and daughter, Kathy, by his side.

Dale Henry Wasson was born April 24, 1931, a son of Gerald and Josephine (Miller) Wasson, in Velva, ND .  He was raised and educated in Velva.

Dale enlisted in the United States Army April 2, 1950. Dale married Matilda E. “Tillie” Rath on August 26, 1951. He proudly served his country during the Korean War and was honorably discharged December12, 1953. He later became a member of the American Legion Post #39.

Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Velva, where they made their home for a short time. Dale and his family later moved to Havre, MT, where he worked for Havre Sand-n-Gravel and also Havre Ready Mix, before starting his career with the Great Northern Railroad, now the Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroad. He was later transferred with the railroad to Minot, ND , where he worked at Gavin Yard. They made their home in Velva, and he continued to work with the BNSF until retiring at age 55, after 37 ½ years.

Retirement did not slow him down, for a few years, he worked for Herbert Lachenmeier, doing cement work, and later worked for Don Berland, bartending for over 10 years.

Dale was a friendly kind of guy, always willing to help anyone if he could. His garage door was always open for anyone to stop by and visit.

While living in Montana, he was an avid bowler, as he was very excited about bowling a 300 once in his life. He also loved hunting and fishing, with his friends, as well as sitting down at the bars playing pull tabs and having a few drinks with his friends. 

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and shared in his life.

Surviving family includes:  wife of 59 years, Tillie, Velva; sons, Randy (Penny Weckwerth) Wasson, Topeka, KS, Robert (Phyllis) Wasson, Laurel, MT, and Dale Wasson, Jr., Minot; daughters, Kathy (Carl) Havskjold, Williston, ND, and Peggy (Gerald) Lachenmeier, Bismarck, ND; grandchildren, Jason, Curt, and Kelly Havskjold, Jodi Huttinger, Jen Isakson, Dana Ebenal, Dusty, Cody, and Taylor Wasson, Tanner Wasson, Angela Wasson Sigloh, and Kandice Wasson; great-grandchildren, Kyus, Kinzie, Kaylin, and Amaias Havskjold, Dominick, Hayley, Morgan, and Zachary Kuchenski; and Jaden Sigloh; brothers, Myron (Carol) Wasson, Clarkston, WA, and Leslie Wasson, Longview, WA; sisters, Marian Keller, Hazen, ND, Josephine (Tom) Henderson, Longview, WA, Bonnie Jean Darvell, Keizer, OR, and Ardis Tangen, Spokane, WA; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Rosanne Wasson; grandson, Dale R. Wasson Sigloh; brother, Orlan Wasson; sister, Gloria Bird.

Funeral
: Thursday, February 24, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva.

Interment:
  Velva Community Cemetery, Velva, ND.

Visitation: 
Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorials
: are preferred to an organization of the donor’s choice.
