Walter G. Walz 1919 - 2003 Walter G. Walz, 83, Kenmare, formerly of New Rockford, ND, died Saturday, February 22, 2003, at a Kenmare Hospital. He was born October 20, 1919, at Ashley, ND, the son of Jacob and Friederika (Kniffel) Walz. He was reared and educated in Ashley. As a young man, Walter joined the CCC. Later he worked in the New Rockford area where he was united in marriage to Ida Ulrich on November 6, 1943. They lived and farmed in the New Rockford area until March of 1955. The couple moved to Pierre, SD, where he did carpentry work. In February of 1956, they purchased the Coast-to-Coast Store in Casselton, ND, which they operated until 1961. In 1962, he attended Hanson's Auto Body School and in 1963, they moved to Salem, OR, where he worked as an auto body technician. Ida died in 1970. Following her death, Walter moved to Ray, ND, where he was employed by S&H Construction. On July 1, 1972, he was united in marriage to Aurelia Powell in Kenmare. The couple owned and operated the Sportsman Café until 1976. Walter then worked for Harris Construction until his retirement. Walter was an active member of the Kenmare Senior Citizens where he held the office of president for a number of years. After Walter's retirement, Walter and Aurelia enjoyed time traveling. Walter loved and enjoyed spending time with his family especially camping at Strawberry Lake and during Christmas Holiday's. He also enjoyed fishing, square dancing and old time music. Survivors: wife, Aurelia, Kenmare; daughter, Jeanette Wobbema (Harold), Minot; daughter-in-law, Violet Grell, Tangent, OR; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; step-sons, Darwin Powell (Sharon), Rockford, IL, Julius Powell (Joan), Warroad, MN and Douglas Powell (Renee), Grand Forks, ND; 11 step grandchildren; 2 step great-grandchildren; brother Ed Walz, New Rockford, ND; sister-in-law, Lois Walz, Bismarck, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Ida, son, Tom Walz, daughter, Mary Walz, brothers, Enoch and Wilbert Walz, one grandson, Harold Wobbema, Jr. and one step-son, Roger Powell. Funeral Service: Wednesday, February 26, 2003, at 1p.m. at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare. Visitation: Tuesday, February 25, 2003, from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Kenmare Burial: Prairie Home Cemetery, New Rockford, ND.
