John Thomas Walters 1938 - 2002 John Thomas Walters, 64, Iowa Avenue, Flaxton, ND, died Saturday, September 21, 2002, from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident. John was born May 14, 1938, at Crown, MN, to Bernie Sr. and Mabel (Negus) Walters. In 1942, he moved with his family to Valley City, ND. He attended a country school there. As a young man he worked for various farmers in the area and then worked for Northern Pacific Railroad for a period of time. He worked for his brother, Jim, doing oil field work in Glendive, MT. He entered the United States Navy in 1956 and served as a Seabee. He was stationed in Newfoundland and Rhode Island. Following his honorable discharge in 1960, he returned to North Dakota and went to worked with his brother at Quality Construction in Flaxton and Lignite, ND. On June 29, 1962, he married Arva Nelson in Flaxton. They made their home in Lignite and later moved to a farm between Lignite and Flaxton. At that time, he worked for Pan America and Amoco. He formed and operated Walters Construction with his family. In 1989, John and Arva bought the Flaxton School where they made their home. He was also involved in farming for the last several years. He was active with the Flaxton Volunteer Fire Department, the Flaxton American Legion, the Flaxton Development Corp. and served as Mayor of Flaxton for a time. Memorials are preferred to organizations in the Flaxton Community, the Flaxton Rural Fire Department, the Flaxton Development Corp. or the Flaxton United Lutheran Church. Survivors: wife, Arva Walters, Flaxton; children, Julie (Mark) Lee, Longmont, CO, John Walters,Jr., Beulah, ND, Steven Walters, Beulah, Karin (Jeff) Stork, Portal, ND, and Brian (Veronique) Walters, Fargo; nine grandchildren, Aaron and Annika Lee, Kristi Kae, Brittnee, Katherine and Breanna Nigg, Mercedes and Brandy Walters, and Matthew Walters; five sisters, Betty (Duane) Fisher, Underwood, ND, Jenny (Donald) Dimmer, Rio Ranch, NM, Mary Ann (Pete) Peterson, Hinsdale, IL, Dorothy (Bob) Erickson, Fargo, and Patricia Allison, Park Rapids, MN; three brothers, William (Kathy) Walters, Wahpeton, ND, Edward (Caryl) Walters, Cando, ND, and Bernie (Judy) Walters Jr., Center, ND. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. His parents and brother, James preceded him in death. Funeral: Wednesday, September 25, 2002, at 11:00 am at Memorial Hall in Flaxton, ND.
