Viola Edith Wald • 1929 - 2008 Viola Nyland was born January 14, 1929 in Osage, MN, the daughter of Thomas and Lillian (Harvala) Nyland. She was raised and educated in Osage and graduated from high school there. She then attended Business College in Fargo, ND. On November 27, 1948, Viola married Michael Wald at Fargo, ND. They lived in various towns in North Dakota and Minnesota, while Michael was working for the railroad. In 1955 they moved to Minot. While living in Minot Viola worked for a number of years at the Elks Lodge and later worked in the auditing office at the Parker Hotel. In 1985 they moved to Karlsruhe, ND. Michael passed away on February 17, 1994. Following his death Viola moved to Minot, where she since had lived. While living in Karlsruhe, Viola was an active member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, and the Karlsruhe Senior Citizens. In recent years she attended St. Leo's Catholic Church. She was an avid reader and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. Her greatest joy was family. Visits from grandchildren always meant grandma's homemade cookies, and special macaroni and cheese - it was the best. Keeping in touch with her ten brothers and sisters was important, and the trips back to her home State of Minnesota were always special times for her. Those who shared in her life, Daughters, Cynthia (Dennis) Nordquist and Peggy (Terry) Quinlen, all in Minot, and Victoria (Reginald "Reg") Springer, Longmeadow, Mass; sons, Thomas (Cathy) Wald, Acworth, GA and David (Paulette) Wald, Minot; 18 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; sisters, Thelma Mitchell, Pearl "Mickey" (LeRoy) Berg and Elvie (Vernie) Zitzow, all of Detroit Lakes, MN, and Lois (Bruce) Mitchell, Kalispell, MT; brothers, Wally (Barb) Nyland, Ada, MN, Norman Nyland, Detroit Lakes, MN, Edwin (Kathy) Nyland, Alexandria, MN, Earl (Betty) Nyland, Lexington, KY, Jerry Nyland, Detroit Lakes, MN and Allen (Cathy) Nyland, Northfield, MN; brothers-in-law, Albert (Diane) Wald, Sierra Vista, AZ and Frank (Esta) Wald, San Pedro, CA; sister-in-law, Mary (Verlin) Belgarde, Billings, MT; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins survive. Viola was preceded in death by her husband, Michael; son, Patrick; and her parents, Thomas and Lillian Nyland. Funeral: Thursday, April 10, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Minot. Visitation: Visitation will be Wednesday, April 9, 2008, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot. Burial: Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Sts.
