Mary Ellen Wald 1926 - 2011

Mary Ellen Wald PhotoMary Ellen Wald, 85, Minot, died Monday, October 10, 2011 in an Underwood, ND, nursing facility.
She was born on August 20, 1926 on the family farm in rural Foxholm, ND, a daughter of Richard L. and Mary (Schmitz) Harmon.  She was reared and educated in that area, attending the Foxholm school and graduating from Carpio High School in 1943.  She then attended the Minot Business College and worked for a time at Minot Implement, where she met John Wald.

Mary Ellen and John were married on November 10, 1950 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Foxholm.  The couple then farmed south of Surrey, ND, until 1964, when they moved to Minot.  Mary Ellen was a devoted mother, staying home to care for her children throughout the years.  She instilled the importance of her Catholic faith on her children, a gift that they carry with them today.

Mary Ellen loved to dance, but her greatest pleasure came at her grandchildren’s birthday parties, where she was always an active participant.

Her home life centered very much around religion.  It was the hub of her family togetherness.  St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Foxholm was the church where she received Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation and Marriage.  She was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Minot since 1950, where she served on the Confraternity of Christian Mothers for many years.

She is survived by her sons Jerald Wald and Eugene Wald both of Minot;  daughters, Nancy Wald, Peggy (Will) Nissen, Lori Ann (Ralph) Fettig and Mary Beth (Jason) Votava all of Minot;  grandchildren, Dustin (Jill) Wald, Aaron (Brie) Wald, W. Matthew (Amanda) Nissen, Levi Nissen, Evan Nissen, Patrick Lenertz, Eric Lenertz, Derrick Fettig, Jennifer Fettig, Jayden Votava and Marissa Votava; 6 great grandchildren; brothers, Richard “Bud” (Verna) Harmon of Minot and Kenneth (Kathy) Harmon of Fairfax, VA; sister, Kathleen “Sis” (Tom) Mastel of Lakeville, MN;  and numerous nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and her parents.
