Ervin W. Vix 1919 - 2004

Ervin W. Vix, 84, Tucson, AZ, formerly of Sawyer, died Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at his home in Tucson.

Ervin was born on July 25, 1919 in Sawyer, North Dakota the son of Christian and Emelia (Faul) Vix. He was reared and educated in the Sawyer and attended the Sawyer School. He worked in his father's coal mines before enlisting in the US Army and was stationed at Fort Benning. He was discharged from the Army when his family needed him back at Sawyer to help in the coal mine. He worked in the Vix Coal Mine until being called back to the US Army after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He served in Africa and Germany with the 2nd Armored Division.

Upon his second discharge from the Army, he owned and operated in garage in Sawyer before moving to Fresno, California and working in a machine shop and later in a auto wrecking yard. He married Betty Burke on February 22, 1948 at St. Alfonso's Church in Fresno. Later he worked for Arbuckle Electronics in Fresno as a salesman and then started his own business, Commercial Equipment Service in Fresno, which sold and repaired all types of electronic equipment including fixing children's toys.

Ervin and Betty moved to Roseberg, Oregon, where they operated a ranch for a time and Ervin spent about a year in the hospital. They then moved to San Jose, California where he reopened Commercial Equipment Service, repairing and selling electronic equipment. He received many letters of commendation for his repair work. He retired in 1981. In July of 1990 they moved to Oak Grove, Missouri and on July 5, 1999 they moved to Tucson, AZ. He repaired electronic equipment until two weeks ago.

He was baptized into the Catholic Church in October of 2003. While living in Fresno, he was a member of a CB radio club that helped the sheriff's office. He also loved to grow roses and grapes.

Surviving: His wife of 56 years, Betty Vix, Tucson, AZ; brother, Herman Vix, Sawyer, Ruth Davidson, Minot, Beaeda Berg, Minot and Florence Henke, Sawyer. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral: Wednesday, July 14, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Minot.

Prayer Service: Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Burial: Wednesday, July 14, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the Sawyer Mennonite Brethren Cemetery, rural Sawyer.

Visitation: Tuesday, July 13, 2004 , noon until 7 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
