Lt. Col. (Ret.) Doyle Van Arsdale 1933 - 2008

Lt. Col. (ret.) Doyle Van Arsdale, 75, Minot, passed away at home with his wife by his side on Tuesday, December 2, 2008.

Doyle was born on October 28, 1933 in Dixon, New Mexico, to Albert and Estle Van Arsdale. He was raised in southern California until the age of 14. The family then moved to Farmington, New Mexico where he graduated from high school in 1952. He attended New Mexico State University and graduated in 1956 with a degree in business administration. He received a Master's Degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1962.

He joined the United States Air Force in 1957 and attended pilot training school in Texas. He served 26 years in the Air Force and flew several different aircraft including B-52's, KC-135's and UH1F helicopters. He was awarded many citations which included the Distinguished Flying Cross, two bronze stars, and eleven air medals. He retired from the Air Force with the rank of Lt. Doyle served in Vietnam, New Hampshire, California, Montana, North Carolina, Spain and Minot.

On May 29, 1976, Doyle married Darlene Sorenson Engen at Chapel 2 at Minot Air Force Base. The lived at MAFB until moving to Spain in 1978.

Doyle retired from the Air Force in 1982 in North Carolina. They returned to Minot in 1983, and he became employed at the base again as a B-52 and KC-135 console operator at the simulator for the next 17 years. He retired from that position in 2004.

He loved golfing and spent many happy times at Souris Valley Golf Course with his golfing friends. He enjoyed traveling in their motor home and going to the southern US during the winter months.

Doyle was a member of the Order of the Daedalians. He was a previous member of the Elks, Eagles, and the American Legion.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Darlene Van Arsdale, Minot; daughter, Kelle Olsen (Bruce) two grandsons, Matthew and Michael and three greatgrandchildren; Dayton, Autumn and Bryden, all of the Fort Walton Beach, Florida area.

Doyle was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Alberta.

His funeral will be on Friday, December 5, 2008 at Zion Lutheran Church, Minot at 10:30 a.m.

Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND

Visitation: Thursday, today, from noon to 7 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society or Trinity Hospice.
