Manfred R. Swenson 1919 - 2008 Manfred Rudolph Swenson was born July 18, 1919, in North Star Township, Burke County near Bowbells, ND, the son of Carl and Ella (Samuelson) Swenson. He was raised and educated in that area. He entered the United States Army on February 2, 1942 and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on December 11, 1945 and returned to the family farm. In November of 1948, Manfred married Irene Torgeson. They lived and farmed near Bowbells and Manfred also custom combined for many years. In 1976 they moved into Bowbells, but he continued to farm until retirement. Manfred was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the American Legion, Carl Oftedahl Post #127, both in Bowbells. Manfred loved hunting and fishing and enjoyed spending time with his good friends on the lake or in the field. Those who shared in his life, his loving wife of 60 years, Irene, Bowbells; son, Glenn (Dorothy) Neil, Fort Mill, S.C.; two grandchildren, Martin Neil and Ginny (Billy) Hice; two great-grandchildren, Hunter and Colby Hice; brother, Elden Swenson, Bowbells; sisters, Arlene (Art) Eklund, Crosby and Gladys Pfeifer of Minnesota; sister-in-law, Marion Swenson, Bowbells; brother-in-law, Ron (Gyenelle) Torgeson, Bismarck; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins survive. Manfred was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Ella Swenson; brothers, Bertil, Henry and Donald Swenson. Memorial Service: Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Bowbells, ND. Visitation: There will be no reviewal, but friends may sign the register Wednesday one hour prior to the service in the church. Burial: A private burial will be held at the Bowbells Community Cemetery, Bowbells, ND. Officiant: Rev.
