Alvina Swenson 1911 - 2011 Alvina Christina Ewald was born on January 3, 1911, a daughter of Sophus J. and Anna M. (Knudsen) Ewald in Flensburg, Germany. In 1914, she traveled with her family to the United States arriving at Ellis Island. The family moved to Bowbells, ND to live near Anna’s sister. Alvina attended school at Lignite, ND, Woburn, ND and Flaxton, ND. On May 20, 1931, Alvina was united in marriage to Floyd M. Swenson in Flaxton, ND. They farmed southeast of Northgate during the depression, and moved to the present Swenson farm, located southeast of Portal. Together they had four boys, Floyd Jr., Alvin, Kenneth and Harold. Floyd died March 13, 1997. Following his death, she continued to live on the Swenson farm, until she was 100 years of age. Alvina liked her flowers and plants, also in the summer she would grow a large garden. She also looked forward to having company and fixing a supper for them and after the dishes were done it was time to play cards. Alvina was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Portal, ND, where she was active with the ladies group. Alvina is survived by: Sons: Floyd (Geraldine) Swenson, Jr., Portal, ND, Kenneth (Donna) Swenson, Backus, MN, Harold (Rose) Swenson, Portal, ND; 13 grandchildren: numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren: one sister Alma Rexford, Marysville Ca, several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins also survive. Alvina was preceded in death by her parents, husband Floyd Swenson Sr., son Alvin, siblings Carl Ewald, Marie Murphy, Annie Hawkins, Agnes Bureau, Elsie Ewald, and John Rose. Visitation: Monday, one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral Service: Monday, August 15, 2011 at 11 am at First Presbyterian Church, Portal, ND Burial: Portal Cemetery, Portal, ND.
