Carl W. Swartout, Jr. 1932 - 2003 Carl W. Swartwout, Jr., 70, Velva, died Sunday, January 26, 2003 in his home. He was born April 16, 1932, in Minot, ND to Carl Sr. and Agnes (Hansen) Swartwout. He was raised on a farm near Surrey, ND and graduated from Surrey High School in 1950. After graduation he farmed with his father until he entered the service. On January 12, 1955, he entered the United States Air Force and served until his honorable discharge on March 26, 1956. Upon his discharge, Carl worked construction as a foreman and heavy equipment operator. On June 5, 1959, he married Marilyn Hatley and they later divorced. He worked at Porter Brothers for several years and recently retired as a blade operator for the McHenry County Highway Department. He was a member of Oak Valley Lutheran Church and was currently serving on the Velva City Council and the Public Library Board. He was also a member of the Velva Economic Development Corp. and was acting Commander of the Velva American Legion Post #39. Survivors: daughters, Lorrie (Norm) Sollid, Granville and Tania (Keith) Klein, Williston; sons, Scott (Lenell) Swartwout, Grafton, Jason Swartwout and fiancée, Jennifer Altman, Casselton, Brian Swartwout and fiancée, Jewelie Klimpel, Minto; mother, Agnes Schmid, Velva; grandchildren, Lance, Kassandra and Sydney Sollid, Tiffany and Samantha Klein, Ryan and Taylor Swartwout, Christopher Swartwout, Alec and Zachary Swartwout; sister, Melodee Bryantt, Deering; brothers, Jimmie (Karen) Swartwout, Surrey, Bruce (Ellen) Swartwout, Baltic, SD and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father and oldest son, Michael Swartwout. Funeral: Thursday, 11:00 a.m. at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva. Visitation: Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Velva. Burial: Fairview Cemetery, Glenburn, ND. Burial will
