William "Bill" D. Stevens-89, 1900 28th St. SW, Minot, died Friday, September 7, 2007 at Trinity Health, Minot.

William "Bill" Stevens was born near Edmore, ND on October 2, 1917 to William and Vera Stevens. After the death of his father in 1927, the family moved to Minot.

He attended Model High School and graduated in 1936 from Minot High School where he was active in basketball and football.

Bill studied telegraphy at night school and obtained employment with the railroad as a train order operator at the Soo Tower in Sawyer, ND. He later became a Chief Dispatcher for the Minot Division of the Great Northern Railroad, which later became the Burlington Northern Railroad. He retired on May 28, 1978 after 34 years of service.

On July 2, 1942, he married LaVerne C. Lee at Havre, MT and in 1944, they moved to Minot where he worked as a telegrapher and train dispatcher. His wife, LaVerne died on October 25, 1995.

Bill made his home at Somerset Court from 2002 to the present. He very much appreciated the staff's care and concern they showed toward him.

He was a sharp card player and also enjoyed a good game of pool. Bill was a member of the Elks, Eagles and Moose Lodge. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Minot.

Bill enjoyed word games with his granddaughter, his son's, singing and watching' TV News. He had a vast knowledge of many subjects because he was an avid reader and loved watching documentaries.

He is survived by his son, William (Rick) Stevens and his wife, Vicki, granddaughter, Jessica Stevens, all of Minot; brothers-in-law, Tom Lee of Walnut Creek, CA and Dean Nichols of Omak, WA, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, LaVerne Stevens, his brother Dean Stevens and sister Betty Nichols.

Funeral: Thursday, September 13, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, Minot, ND

Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND

Visitation: Wednesday, September 12, 2007 from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.
