Arnold Sterud 1922 - 2010

Arnold Sterud PhotoArnold Sterud, 88, Gilbert, AZ, formerly of Minot, ND, died Thursday, October 7, 2010, at Hospice of the Valley in Gilbert, AZ.

Arnold Leonard Sterud was born April 30, 1922, a son of Leonard and Julia (Hoverud) Sterud, in Kenmare, ND. He was raised on the Sterud family farm near Kenmare until his teenage years, when he moved with his family to Minot. He continued his education in Minot, graduating from Minot High School in 1939.

Arnold enlisted in the United States Navy September 4, 1942. He proudly served his country during WWII in the Pacific on the USS Goff. He was honorably discharged October 30, 1945. 

Arnold married Laverne B. Kittelson June 14, 1942, at First Lutheran Church in Minot. They made their home in Minot, where they raised their six children. Arnold worked for The Great Northern Railroad, which later became The Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroad as a yardmaster for over 40 years. He retired in 1985. In 1969, he began working in real estate for Minot Realty. He later received his broker’s license and began employment with Coldwell Banker.

Laverne passed away June 19, 2006. Arnold continued to reside in Minot until 2007, when he moved to Gilbert, AZ, to be closer to his son, Brian.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Minot, and was a life member of the Minot Elks Lodge.

Surviving family includes:
Sons, Robert Sterud, Boston, MA, Kim Sterud, Phoenix, AZ, Brian Sterud, Gilbert, AZ; daughter, Christine Sterud; A brother, Carl Sterud, Snoqualmie, WA. Minot, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Arnold was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Laverne; sons, Gary and Donald Sterud; and brothers, Nels Nelson and Art Sterud.

Funeral: Saturday, October 16, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, Minot.

Interment:  Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND. immediately following the church service.

Visitation:  Friday from 2 to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
