Myron A. Stemen 1937 - 2003

Myron A. Stemen, 66, 306 Davis St., Burlington, ND, died Saturday, October 11, 2003, in a Minot hospital.

Myron was born May 9, 1937, in Nortonville, ND, the son of Leo and Burnadeen (Myers) Stemen. In 1942, he moved to Burlington with his family. He attended grade school in Burlington and graduated from Minot High School in 1955. Myron worked for Peter Kiewit Construction at the Minot Air Force Base, and various other construction jobs in this area. He also worked for Montana Dakota Utilities in Minot for a time. In 1960 he entered the Army Reserves and served with the 311th Medical Unit.

On November 25, 1961, he married Carol Luke, at St. Ann's Catholic Church, in Berthold. They lived all their married life in Burlington. Myron worked with his father, Leo, doing welding and septic tank services. In the 1960's they purchased a backhoe and began Stemen Excavating, a business Myron owned and operated until his death.

Myron served on the Des Lacs/Burlington, United #7 school board for 12 years and drove school bus for United #7 for 40 years. He was a member of the Burlington Economic Development Committee, and for a number of years he worked maintenance for West River Water and Sewer. Myron was a member of the Burlington Lions Club, and the Knights of Columbus and the Eagles Aerie, both in Minot. He was a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Foxholm, and Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot, and was currently a member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Minot.

Survivors: Wife, Carol, Burlington; children, Shelly (John) Lauinger, Velva, Jeff Stemen, Fort Worth, TX, and Sharon (Steve) Morgans, Sioux Falls, SD; five grandchildren, Lance and Cole Lauinger, Sara, Ryan, and Noah Morgans; brothers, Delvin Stemen, Burlington, Darrel Stemen, Detroit Lakes, MN, and Clifton (Marlene) Stemen, New Paris, IN; sisters, Edna (Don) Harrington, Kiln, MS, Olive (Lyle) Coonradt, Sioux Falls, SD, and Erma Cupit, Fort Worth, TX; mother-in-law, Mae Luke, Berthold, ND; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins survive. Myron was preceded in death by his son, Mark Stemen; his parents, Leo and Burnadeen Stemen; and his father-in-law, Ken Luke.

Funeral: Wednesday, October 15, 2003, at 10:30 a.m., at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Minot, ND.

Visitation and vigil prayer service: Visitation will be Tuesday, October 14, 2003, from noon to 7:00 p.m., with a vigil prayer service Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., all at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.

Burial: Burlington Township Cemetery, Burlington, ND.
