John "Jack" Steinberger • 1926 - 2010 John Scott “Jack” Steinberger was born August 8, 1926, in White Ash Township of Renville County to Henry and Edna (Tewell) Steinberger. He attended White Ash Country School for six years. His eighth grade year was in Carpio and at the age of sixteen, he graduated from Kenmare High School. He then attended the North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, ND, for one year. Jack enlisted in the United States Army in September of 1944, and served in the Philippine Islands and later in the Army of Occupation in Japan. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant on November 20, 1946, and by then had decided to farm. Jack married Elizabeth Jane Salvey on November 13, 1948, at St. Jerome’s Catholic Church in Mohall. For the next fifty six years they lived and farmed in White Ash Township. He was married to Betty for over sixty-one years. Together they enjoyed traveling to all 50 states as well as New Zealand, Australia, Fiji Islands, Italy, Canada, Mexico, and the Netherlands. On December 8, 2004, they moved to Minot. Their nine children are: John (Pamela) Steinberger, Jr., Kenmare, Mark (Colleen) Steinberger, Hillsboro, Barbara (Kurt) Witteman, Fargo, Philip (Renee) Steinberger, Forsyth, MT, Kathleen (Duane) Binde, Williston, Mary-Beth Gross, Minot, Jeffrey (Twyla) Steinberger, Sioux Falls, SD, Michele (Ralph) Erickson, Fargo, and Dan (Erin) Steinberger, West Fargo. His grandchildren include: John Steinberger III, James Steinberger, Desireé Steinberger, Alexander Steinberger, and Charles Steinberger; Henry (Janet) Steinberger, Benjamin Steinberger, Lucas (Lacee) Steinberger, Andrew (Lisa) Steinberger, and Shawn (Julie) Steinberger; Ryan Witteman, and Anne Witteman; Kacey (Eric) Tulley, Kelly (David) Villarreal, Drew Steinberger, and Beau Steinberger; Christopher (Catherine) Binde, Matthew Binde, and SaraElizabeth (Eric) Lundquist; Brett Gross; Samuel Steinberger, Marilyn Steinberger, and Braden Steinberger; Hannah Erickson, and Elizabeth Erickson; Jared Steinberger, and Andrea Steinberger; great-grandchildren, Zackery Steinberger, Brooke Steinberger, Jace Steinberger, Cole Steinberger, Montana Tulley, and Annabel Steinberger. As a parent and grandparent Jack was very proud of his highly educated children and later, his grandchildren. Jack’s advice was always “Love one another.” Jack was a life member (65 years) with of the Clarence McCormack American Legion Post #195 of Donnybrook, where he had served as the Sgt-at-Arms for 35 years as well as Post Commander; and a lifetime member of the VFW and Minot Elks. He was a lifetime member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Donnybrook, where he served as a trustee and communion minister. After moving to Minot, he joined Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. Jack was also a member of the Cursillo Movement, and since 1958 was a part of Father Patrick Peyton’s rosary crusade. He received the Renville County Township Officers Grassroots Government Leadership Award in 2000 and the Mr. Township Award from the ND Township Officer’s Association in 2000. He is also survived by his sister, Virginia-Lee Bryans, Donnybrook; and his sister-in-law, Lucille Neubauer, Bottineau; as well as nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial: Saturday, August 28, 2010, at 1:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot.
