Duane H. "Budd" Staael 1927 - 2011

Duane "Budd" Staael PhotoDuane H. “Budd” Staael, 84, Kenmare, ND, died Sunday, June 5, 2011 in a Kenmare Hospital.

Duane was born on February 11, 1927, a son of Otto and Thea (Hillestad) Staael in Kenmare, ND. He was raised and educated in Kenmare. Following his schooling, Budd began his working career hauling cattle. He then worked for Butler Machinery, for Boeing in the security department and then began a career with the Soo Line Railroad. He began as a section man, worked his way to be a heavy equipment operator, and retired as a Foreman. 

On November 1, 1960, Duane was united in marriage to Alice Mae “Peggy” Peterson in Plentywood, MT. They lived in Kenmare and Willow City, ND. Peggy died May 6, 1999. Following her death, Budd continued to live in Kenmare

Budd was a lifetime member of the Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare, ND, where he was baptized and confirmed. He also enjoyed bowling, playing cards, playing pool, fishing and “junking.” He was a devoted father and grandfather.  

Those who survive:  Children: Vicki Staael, Holly Staael, both of Kenmare, ND; Tammy Hoppel and her husband Mark, Mason City, IA: Rick (Johanna) Staael, Highlands Ranch, CO; four grandchildren: Marissa and Michael Hill and Abby and Christopher Staael; sister, Vie Dennhardt, Sun City, AZ; daughters-of-the-heart: Jodi Pierce-Marmon, Carpio, ND and Brenda Johnson-Berntson, Minot; nephew Walter H. “Butch” Dennhardt Jr., Stillwater, MN; several grandnieces and grandnephews also survive.

Duane was preceded in death by his wife Peggy, parents; brothers Harold Staael, Orville and Meirl and a sister Gladys Claxton and her husband Kenneth, a niece Sandra Dennhardt and brother-in-law, Walter Dennhardt Sr. 

Visitation:  Thursday, June 9, 2011 from 4-7 at Thompson Larson Funeral Home, Kenmare, ND

Funeral Service:  Friday, June 10, 2011, 11 am at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare

Following the funeral service, everyone is invited to join the family for lunch and fellowship in the lower level of the church.
