Gary L. Spielvogel, 64, 315 16th St. SW, Minot, ND, died Sunday, December 26, 2004, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family at Trinity Hospital.

Gary Lynn Spielvogel was born on August 23, 1940, the son of Myron and Harriet (Larson) Spielvogel in Missoula, Montana. The family made their home in Ronan, MT, until 1950, when they moved to Burlington, ND. He attended Burlington grade school and graduated from Minot High School in 1958. He then attended Minot State College for a couple of years before moving to California to work at the Pacific State Steel Company. He later returned to North Dakota and attended the University of North Dakota where he earned his B.S. degree in Business.

Gary married Jo Ann Hennes on June 8, 1968, at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Minot. They made their home in Minot, where he was employed by the General Adjustor Bureau as an Insurance Adjustor for 10 years. Then in 1977, he began employment with Milbank Mutual Insurance as a Claims Representative. He managed the Minot branch for 20 plus years. He stormed across the country when natural disasters struck, assisting those in need.

In 1977, Gary and Jo Ann purchased the KOA Campground. They owned and operated it until 1985. They then purchased the Dairy Queen/Orange Julius in the Dakota Square Mall in 1991. They have operated it for the past 13 years. A daily highlight for Gary was to open the store and meet his buddies for coffee, their morning ritual.

Gary was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, Minot. He was also a member of the Colin Brown Y's Men, where he has served as chairman of the Triangle Y Camp Committee. He had designed and built many of the signs for the camp. He had served on the Board of Directors of the YMCA for the past 12 years. He was chairman of the building committee for the new YMCA, and was a two-time winner of the Volunteer Layman of the Year Award. He was a former member of the Eagles Aerie and Elks Clubs.

He loved to golf. He was particularly fond of the YMCA. He also enjoyed playing recreation basketball, softball, racquetball, and watching hockey. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren as he would never turn down an opportunity to play catch, football, or Wee-Links golf with Mason.
