Selmer O. Sorby 1925 - 2005

Selmer O. Sorby, 79, Minot, formerly of Garrison and Kenmare, died Monday June 6, 2005 in a Minot nursing home, following a lengthy illness.

Selmer was born on November 12, 1925, in Madison, MN, the son of Olaus and Oline Sorby. He moved with his family to a farm near Hastings, ND where he was raised and educated.

He worked on the farm until 1946, and then went to work at a flour mill in Valley City, ND, where he worked for a year and a half. He moved to Lisbon and drove transport truck for Grandadam Truck Lines until he was drafted into the United States Army on September 22, 1950. He served during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in June of 1952.

On February 13, 1952 he married Phyllis Sunby in Lisbon, ND. They moved to Fargo where he attended Barber College and graduated in March of 1954. He barbered his first two years in Enderlin, ND. The family then moved to Garrison where he barbered at Vern Dwelle's for seven years. On April 13, 1963 he opened his own barber shop, which he owned and operated until his retirement in the fall of 2000.

Phyllis passed away February 12, 1999. Following her death and his retirement in Garrison he met Adeline Olsen. They met at the Minot Moose where they went dancing weekly. He moved to Kenmare and opened a barbershop which he operated for 2 ½ years. He married Adeline on June 18, 2001. In May 2003 the couple moved to Minot.

Selmer was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot. He was a former member of Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare, and St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Garrison, where he was very active in the church and served as church treasurer for a number of years. He was a member of the Garrison American Legion and was very active in the Garrison community serving on the Garrison Welcome Wagon Committee for many years. Selmer was a member of the North Dakota Barbers Association.

Survivors: Wife, Adeline, Minot; sons, James Sorby, Brooklyn Center, MN, and Steven (Sheri) Sorby, Bismarck; stepchildren, Allen Ackerman, Kenmare, Rollan (Vicki) Ackerman, Minot, and Adele (Fran) Floryancic, Denver, CO; numerous step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren; brother, Fred (Myrtle) Sorby, Dayton, MN; sister, Lilly Miller, Enderlin, ND; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis, parents, Olaus and Oline Sorby; brother, Obert Sorby, and sister, Signe Sorby.

Funeral Service: Friday, June 10, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot

Visitation and prayer service: Thursday, June 9, 2005 from noon until 5:00 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, and from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with the prayer service at 7:00 at Bethany Lutheran Church.

Burial: Saturday, June 11, 2005, at 11:00 a.m., at the Garrison City Cemetery.
