Alpha Sophia Tandberg Herslip Soland 1950 - 2004

Alpha Sophia Tandberg Herslip Soland, 93, Minot, died Friday, August 27, 2004, at a Minot nursing home.

She was born on November 29, 1910, in Richmond County, ND, the daughter of John and Anna (Braaten) Tandberg. Alpha was one of thirteen children and attended school in Spurs River and Glenora, Canada and later Newburg, ND.

On September 2, 1932, Alpha married Clarence H. Herslip and they lived in the Newburg area on the Kersten farm. In 1937, the couple purchased their present farm 10 miles southwest of Newburg in Pratt Township. The couple had three children, Floyd, Harvey, and Avisann. Alpha worked cleaning houses and she drove bus for the Newburg School District for 8 years. She also worked in the café in Newburg and Upham and sold Tupperware and Avon for over 30 years. Alpha also assisted Clarence on the farm driving the grain truck, hauling bundles to thresh, milk cows, and gathering eggs. Clarence died in 1977, and Alpha continued to live on the farm.

In 1980, Alpha married Conrad Soland. Conrad died in August of 1983, and Alpha moved to Minot.

She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Upham and was active with in the Luther Women's Mission League, Busy Bee Homemakers Club, Women of the Moose, and volunteered at Trinity Homes for 20 years. She attended St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Minot for the last 15 years.

Survivors: sons, Floyd Herslip (Delores), Harvey Herslip (Florence); daughter, Avisann "Avis" (Richard) Rogers; all of Minot; 9 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Lester Tandberg (Lois), Minot, and Melvin Tandberg (Kay), Union Gap, WA; sisters, Viola Hunskor, Newburg, Violet Anderson, Rugby, and Florence Ress, Cheyenne, WY; numerous great nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Clarence and Conrad, grandson, Clarence Rogers, great-granddaughter, Choel Tamke, brothers, Alfred, Julius and John Tandberg; and sisters, Tilda Olson, Myrtle Johnson, Alma Pierson, and Anna Johnson.

Funeral Service: Tuesday, August 31, 2004, at 11 a.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Minot.

Visitation: Monday, August 30, 2004, from Noon until 7 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Burial: Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, Upham, ND. Burial will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 31, 2004.
