Thomas G. Smith, 59, Portal, ND, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009 in a Minot hospital.

Thomas was born on April 1, 1950, a son of George and Velma (Haxton) Smith, in Kenmare, ND. He attended school in Bowbells and Portal.

On September 13, 1968, he enlisted into the United States Army. He proudly served his country during the Vietnam Conflict, and was honorably discharged on September 1, 1974.

Following his discharge, he worked for Wheatland Oil Company and in the oil fields in the Portal area. Thomas moved to Everett, WA, where he worked for Nord-door Company until 2000, when he returned to Portal, ND. He worked for a fiber optic construction company in ND and SD.

Thomas, known as "Hawk" to his friends, enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, making venison jerky and sausage for his family and friends.

Mother: Velma, Portal, ND; brother: William (Lavinia) Smith, Concrete, WA; sister Linda Dahl, Everett, WA; nieces and nephews: Cindy (Dave) Wilson, Snohomish, WA, Brady (Monica) Smith, Everett, WA, Brian Smith, Everett, WA, Melody Smith, Everett, WA, Christie (Luke) Bagley, Granite Falls, WA; great-nieces and great-nephews: Sarah, Dirk, Audrey, Natalie, Brennan and Layne. Numerous aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.

He was preceded in death by his father George, maternal and paternal grandparents, nephew Troy Louis Smith, uncles Ormond Haxton, Harvey Haxton Jr., Hans Peterson, Clarence Peterson, Eddie Peterson, Gordon Smith, Leroy Smith, and aunt Marcella Bergstreser.

Visitation: Monday, one hour prior to the service at the Portal Community Center, Portal.

Funeral Service: Monday, June 8, 2009 at 1:00 pm at the Portal Community Center, Portal, ND

Burial: Portal Community Cemetery, Portal, ND
