Sheldon I. Smith 1928 - 2002 Sheldon I. Smith, 74, formerly of Powers Lake, ND, died Tuesday, September 17, 2002, in a Minot nursing care facility. Sheldon was born on June 5, 1928, on the family farm in Foothills Township, Burke County, ND, to James and Minnie (Reistad) Smith. He attended rural school near his home. Following his education, he helped his parents with the operation of the family farm. In August of 1945, he entered the United States Navy and served during WW II. He was honorably discharged from the service in 1946. He returned to North Dakota and resumed his work as a farmer. He lived on the farm with his parents and helped care for them as they got older. On the farm is where Sheldon enjoyed himself the most. He loved to fix and repair old equipment, machinery and anything else that needed attention. He enjoyed coming in the house, and at the drop of a hat, decide to take his parents and himself for a drive to some area town or community. He enjoyed playing cards and fishing. His parents passed away and he remained on the farm. He moved to the Kenmare Baptist Home, where he lived for several years. In May of 2002, he moved to Minot and lived at Trinity Homes until the time of his death. He was a member of Tonset Lutheran Church, rural Lignite. His parents and one nephew, Rick Young, preceded him in death. Funeral: Saturday, September 21, 2002, 2:00 p.m., at Christ Lutheran Church, Lignite, ND. Visitation: Saturday, September 21, 2002, from noon until service time at the church. Burial: Flaxton Community Cemetery, Flaxton, ND.
