Curtis Smith PhotoCurtis D. Smith, 77, Minot, passed peacefully into the Lord’s arms Thursday, October 28, 2010 in his home, with his family members at his side.

Curtis Dale Smith was born November 23, 1932 on the family farm in rural Deering, ND, the son of Merle and Mathilda Smith.  He was raised on the family farm in Saline Township and educated at Saline Township schools.  As a young man Curtis worked on the family farm and as a farm hand for the “Big Sky” Ranch for Mr. H.H. Fisher.

On December 15, 1952, Curtis enlisted into the US Navy.  He proudly served his country aboard The USS Monrovia, USS Cambria, USS Olmstedard, and USS Krishna.  He was honorably discharged on December 7, 1956.

Curtis was united in marriage to Marva Deane Smette on July 13, 1957 in Reno, NV.  They made their home in San Diego, CA, where Curtis worked at Rohr Aircraft.  In 1960, they moved to Albany, OR where Curtis worked as a rare metals machinist.  In 1971, they moved the family to North Dakota, where Curtis worked in Landa, ND with Hans Festvog at Festvog Machine.  In 1973 Curtis took over the Mobil Oil Bulk Service out of Landa, and in the spring of 1974, Curtis moved the family to Bottineau, ND to expand the Mobil Bulk Service.  In 1978 Curtis purchased the Roto-Rooter Drain Service franchise in Minot and moved the family to Burlington, ND.  Curtis operated the franchise in both Minot and Williston.  In 2000, Curtis sold the business and moved into Minot.  In retirement Curtis worked part time with Fisher Motors within the Customer Service area.

Curtis was a member of the Bread of Life Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 26, The Minot Moose, VFW and was a former member of the Elks and Eagles.  In retirement Curtis volunteered to maintain the Saline Township Cemetery….something that was very rewarding to him.  Curtis was a proud Veteran, a proud North Dakotan, and a life-long Green Bay Packers Fan.  He spent many Sundays at Lambeau field with family.
