Evelyn Marie Smetana, 86, Minot, passed away peacefully in her home on January 16, 2008, with her daughter, Peggy, by her side.

Evelyn Davis was born on April 15, 1921, the daughter of Patrick and Zua (Bradley) Davis in Waterford Township, Ward County, ND. Evelyn received her formal education in rural schools in Renville and Ward Counties. She later attended St. Leo's High School in Minot.

On August 23, 1944, she was united in marriage to Jerry J. Smetana in Minot. This was a double wedding, uniting also Jerry's sister, Tillie, in marriage to Harry Sellin. They lived in Fort Bliss, Texas for about a year, while Jerry finished his service in the US Army, and moved to Minot after his discharge.

Evelyn worked at various jobs through the years while raising their five children. Evelyn and Jerry were owner/operators of the Circle N Inn in Minot for a few years. She then cooked at various restaurants. She assisted Jerry in his carpentry work, often designing and helping to build various homes. In later years, she and Jerry cleaned offices at Morris Rodweeders and then at the First District Health Unit. Jerry died December 1, 1987. She continued to work at FDHU until her retirement on May 31, 1994. Her faith and family were the most important things in her life.

She was a member of both Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church and St. Leo's Catholic Church. Evelyn and Jerry were members of the Moose lodge and loved to go dancing every week. She was a founding member of the Celtic Heritage Society in Minot.

Those who shared in her life: son: Dennis (Betty) Smetana, Minot; daughters: Linda Scott, Minot, Peggy Smetana, Minot, Rebecca "Becky" (Gary) Volk, Minot, and Nikki (Gerry) Veilleux, Manchester, NH; eleven grandchildren: Cord Scott, Micah Scott, Quinn Smetana, Kara (Matt) Murphy, Kris Smetana, Ryan Smetana, Kila (Mike) Szymanski, Jocee (Jason) Wolf, Mandy (Shawn) McNamara, Travis Veilleux, and Lacy Veilleux; six great-grandchildren: Zia Scott, Jayna Scott, Audra Murphy, Logan Murphy, Conner McNamara and Mia Szymanski; step grandchild: Tausha (Michael) Redmond; step great-grandchildren: Elizabeth and Jillian Redmond; sister: Donna Williams, Havre, MT; brother-in-law: Lyle Randall, Independence, OR; sisters-in-law: Tillie Sellin, Mohall, ND, and Doris Davis, Minot; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers, Francis and Edward, sisters, Helen Reinier, Thelma Randall, Frieda Davis, and Lois Davis.

Visitation: Monday, January 21, 2008 from 1-5 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home Chapel, Minot and Monday from 6-7 at the St. Leo's Catholic Church, Minot

Vigil Prayer Service with rosary recitation: Monday, January 21, 2008 at 7 p.m. at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Minot

Mass of Christian Burial: Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Minot.

Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

Evelyn and Jerry will lead us out with their first eternal dance. They will dance to her favorite song “Cab Driver,” which will be played by her grandsons, Micah and Cord Scott.
