Arthur M. Slind 1914 - 2004 Arthur M. Slind, 89, 1545-32nd Ave. SW, Minot, ND, died Wednesday, September 22, 2004, at a Minot nursing home. Arthur Morris Slind was born on November 28, 1914, on his parents farm located in Amundsville Township of McLean County, rural Ryder, ND. He was the son of Bersvend "Ben" and Ingeborg (Harstad) Slind. He was the second oldest of nine children. Art (as he was known by his friends) graduated from Ryder High School in 1934. Following his graduation, Art sought work in the Civilian Conservation Corp. On December 22, 1942, Art married Mildred L. Engelson in Sidney, MT. On December 28, 1942, he was drafted into the United States Army. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, he took on a defense related job with Boeing Aircraft in Bellingham, WA. In 1946, Art and Mildred returned to North Dakota where they purchased a farm located in Amundsville Township of McLean County, near Parshall, ND. Art dedicated his life to farming. They farmed small grains and raised livestock. In addition to farming, Art was an active member of his community. He served on the Makoti Farmers Elevator board for 12 years, was a member of the Makoti American Legion, and was a devoted member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, rural Roseglen, ND. In 1987, after 41 years of farming, Art and Mildred retired and moved to Minot, ND. He treasured his leisure time spent at the Moose Lodge and was a member of Christ Lutheran Church. During his golden years, Art developed Macular Degeneration and was a member of the Minot Blind and Visually Impaired Support group. During his retirement years, Art and Mildred enjoyed spending winters in Apache Junction, Arizona, with relatives and friends. He also enjoyed country and western music, dinners at the Moose and riding his scooter. Art was a great story teller and he enjoyed telling jokes and visiting with friends. Even though he had been retired for several years, he enjoyed taking trips out to the farm to survey the current year's crop. Art and Mildred enjoyed traveling to visit their children and grandchildren throughout the years. Most importantly, Art was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He especially enjoyed spending as much time as possible with his nine grandchildren throughout his life. Art enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting events and even though he was visually impaired, he listened to the games with skill. His loving family includes: Art was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Kenneth, Melvin, Rueben, and Lynn; sister, Myrtle Sessing; and a grandson, Gregory Stockwell.
