Olive J. Sinn 1921 - 2005 Olive J. Sinn, 83, 1712 6th St SE, Minot, ND, died July 31, 2005, in a Minot nursing home. Olive was born on August 9, 1921, in Ryder, ND, the daughter of Albert and Minnie (Saggau) Johansen. She attended grades 1 through 4 at Ryder and grades 5 through 8 in a country school in Anna Township and graduated from Ryder High School in 1939. Olive graduated from Minot State Teachers College in Minot in 1941, with a Standard Teaching Certificate. She taught in a rural school near Makoti, ND, and also in the Penn Public Schools in Penn, ND. She then worked in the Ballistics Department of the Des Moines Ordinance Plant, in Des Moines, IA, during World War II. On August 9, 1944, Olive married John E. Sinn. John, in the Army, was stationed at San Luis Obispo, CA. The couple lived in California until John was sent overseas to serve in the European Theatre in 1945. After John's discharge from the service, they lived in Ryder, Garrison, ND, and Fort Peck, MT, Cavalier, ND and later Minot. The couple also lived for a brief time at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois and Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. Olive and John had two children, LTG Jerry L . Sinn and Lois Sinn-Lindquist; and two grandsons, Jacob and Andrew Sinn. Olive worked for many years as a substitute teacher, office manager, and Clerk of the Garrison Public Schools. She was the Office Manager in the Glasgow Clinic and in the Construction Branch of the Corps of Engineers while living in Fort Peck, MT. Olive was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Ryder. After her marriage she was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Garrison, Fort Peck Lutheran Church and most recently First Lutheran Church, Minot. She was active in numerous church activities through the years including teaching Bible school and Sunday school, Altar Guilds, Calling Committees, Lutheran Church Circles, Lutheran Church Women, Library Board and Service Groups. Olive was also a very active member and officer of the Ward County Local AARP and an active volunteer with the NARFE organization. Quilting was a joy for Olive. She was an active member of the Prairie Quilters Club in Minot for many years, and the First Lutheran Church Quilt Committee where Olive and her quilting friends created quilts to be auctioned for the Lake Metigoshe Bible Camp. When she wasn't quilting, Olive was knitting Afghans for special gifts. Olive and John enjoyed traveling, seeing much of the United States and Europe. Survivors: husband, John, Minot; son, LTG Jerry Sinn and his wife Cheryl, Washington, DC and their sons, Jacob Sinn, of Washington, DC, and Andrew Sinn, Ft. Belvoir, VA; daughter, Lois Sinn Lindquist and her husband, R. Robert, Roseville, MN; brother, Herbert Johansen and his wife, Dolores, Ryder; sister in law, Loretta Johansen, Bella Vista, AR and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Evelyn and brother, Delbert. Funeral Service: Thursday, August 4, 2005, at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, Minot. Visitation: Today, Wednesday, August 3,2 005, from Noon until 7 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot. Officiants: Rev. Todd Hylden and Rev.
