Wayne Vernon Shipman 1926 - 2008

Wayne Vernon Shipman, 82, Minot, formerly of Granville, ND, died Sunday, November 23, 2008, in a Minot Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Wayne was born on January 15, 1926, in North Prairie Township, McHenry County, near Simcoe, ND, the son to Charles Vernon and Lottie Luella (Kaylor) Shipman. He attended country school near Simcoe and graduated from Velva High School in 1944. He entered the United States Army on April 18, 1945 and served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and Okinawa, Japan as a medic during World War II. He was honorably discharged on December 20, 1946 and returned to the family farm near Simcoe.

Wayne married Mary "Cindy" Riccitelli on June 30, 1962 at North Prairie Lutheran Church, Simcoe. They lived in Granville and farmed at Simcoe. Cindy died on February 24, 1975.

On March 12, 1980 in Las Vegas, Nevada, he married Arlene Lazier. They continued to farm in the Simcoe area until moving to Minot in 1992.

Wayne was a 50 year member of the Masonic Ashley Lodge #69 in Granville, the Order of Eastern Star, the Granville American Legion Post #155, the Minot Shrine Club Scottish Rite, the Elks Lodge, the Eagles Aerie and was a member of the Moose Lodge, all in Minot. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Granville, and Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot. Among many of Wayne's achievements, he was honored as the Conservation award winner of North McHenry County as "Farmer of the Year" by the State of North Dakota in 1989.

Wayne dearly loved his wife, children and grandchildren. Wayne had a passion for helping others around him. He was a good husband, a great father, wonderful grand-father and mentor. He will be deeply missed and his memories will remain with us forever.

Wayne is survived by his loving wife, Arlene Shipman, Minot; children, Linda Duchscherer, Eden Prairie, MN, Colette (Paul) McConville, Minneapolis, MN, Cheryl Lazier, Hazen, ND, Brian (Janet) Lazier, Washburn, ND and Marie (Danny) Mueller, Minot; eight grandchildren, Broc (Kacie) McConville, Derek Duchscherer, Cole (Dana Saari) Duchscherer, Brianna Lazier, Chelsey Lazier, Brandon "Buddy" Lazier, Jayme Mueller and Erik Berland; sisters, Peggy DeBernardi, Huntington Beach, CA and Jeanette (Don) Brayton, Woodland Park, CO; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins survive.

Wayne was preceded in death by his first wife, Cindy; his parents, Charles and Lottie Shipman; brother, Marvin Shipman and sister, Beverly Newman.

Funeral: Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at 11:00 a.m.at Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot, ND.

Visitation: Tuesday, November 25, 2008, from noon to 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Masonic Service open to the public: Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home Chapel, Minot.

Immediately following the funeral everyone is invited to join the family in the lower level of the church for lunch and fellowship.

Burial: Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Granville Community Cemetery, Granville, ND.

Military honors by members of the Granville American Legion Post #155

Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 2:00 p.m., there will be no formal procession.
