Dorothy Shelkey 1906 - 2002

Dorothy M. Shelkey, 95, Minot, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, in a Minot nursing home.

She was born on November 1, 1906, in Berthold, ND the daughter of Curtis and Mary (Schultz) Birdsall. She attended school in Berthold and graduated in 1925. In December of 1925, she married Lawrence Shelkey. They moved to a farm on Berthold's west edge in 1940, where they lived and had three children. Lawrence died in April of 1956. Dorothy moved to Minot where she held various jobs including cooking at Minot State College and working at Montana Dakota Utilities. In 1958, she went to work for the Minot Veterinary Clinic and retired after 18 years there.

Dorothy loved to travel and was fortunate to be able to visit several places domestic and abroad. Trips abroad took her to Libya, Malta, Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, Holland, England, Wales and Scotland.

Dorothy was an avid gardener and took pride in her yard, filling it with numerous flowers and spending many hours weeding and feeding.

She had been a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Minot since 1959. She was a member of the Evening Circle, sang in the choir, and was the church's first financial secretary, a position she held for 12 years.

Memorials are preferred to the Congregational United Church Of Christ, Minot.

Survivors: son Darrel Shelkey, Austin, TX; daughter Ruth Shelkey, Bakersfield, CA; two daughter's- in-law, Myrna Shelkey, Minot, and Rose Shelkey, Berthold; 17 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and 35 great great-grandchildren. Numerous nieces, nephews and relatives also survive. Her husband Lawrence, her parents, son Dale Shelkey, grandson Larry Shelkey, granddaughter JoAnne Woloszyn, great-grandson Benjamin Shelkey, three brothers, Samuel, Curtis, and William Birdsall, and two sisters, Addie Peterson and Agnes White, preceded her in death.

Funeral Service: Saturday, May 18, 2002, 11:00 a.m. at Congregational United Church of Christ, Minot, ND

Visitation: Friday, May 17, 2002, from noon to 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND

Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND
