Gena Sheelar 1910- 2006

Gena Sheelar, 96, Velva, ND, formerly of Ruso died Wednesday, November 8, 2006, in a Minot hospital.

She was born on September 11, 1910, to Nels and Ingeborg (Lien) Madsen on a farm 2 miles south of Ruso ND. She attended grade school in Ruso the first five years then for the last three years, she attended country school. She graduated from Velva High School in 1931.

Gena married Henry Sheelar on September 14, 1937. The couple farmed and raised four children on the farm near Strawberry Lake, McLean County. Henry passed away on April 28, 1986. Gena moved to the Souris Valley Care Center in April of 2006.

Gena enjoyed the outdoors, playing whist and bingo.

She served as treasurer for Otis Township for a number of years. She was a member of a local homemakers club, the Butte Senior Citizens, and Concordia Lutheran Church in Benedict. Gena was a former member of First Lutheran Church in Ruso.

Survivors: son, Marvin (Linda) Sheelar, Ruso; daughters, Mary Ann (Carrol) Bakken, Voltaire, ND, Ella (Eugene) Schon, Turtle Lake, ND and Maxine (Terry) Berg, Turtle Lake; grandchildren, Steve (Shelly) Schon, Bismarck, Chad Schon, Bismarck, Delilia (Rich) Wolf, Ruso, Sarah Schon and her fiancée Jarvis Keney, Wilton; two great-grandchildren, Derek and Dawson Schon, Bismarck; brother, Morris Madsen, Minot; sisters-in-law, Charlotte Madsen, Garrison, Hulda Madsen, Turtle Lake, and Clarice Sheelar, Ruso; and numerous niece and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Henry, daughter, Ellen Sheelar, great granddaughter, Kaylee Schon and her brothers, Nelvin "Ned" Madsen and Palmer Madsen.

Funeral Service: Sunday, November 12, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Concordia Lutheran Church, Benedict

Visitation: Saturday, November 11, 2006, from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Velva

Burial: Ruso Cemetery, Ruso, ND.

Memorials preferred to the Ruso Cemetery, Concordia Lutheran Church, Benedict or the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva.
