Loretta M. Schwinkendorf 1923 - 2010

Loretta Schwinkendorf photoLoretta M. Schwinkendorf, 87, Parshall, ND, formerly of Minot, died Tuesday, July 20, 2010 in Parshall. 

Loretta Marcella Kunkel was born June 20, 1923 on the family farm near Almont, ND to Bernard and Anna (Maart) Kunkel.  She was raised on a farm south of New Salem, ND, and attended country school in that area.

Loretta married Reinhold A. Schwinkendorf April 5, 1942.  While he served in the United States Army she resided with his father on their family farm also south of New Salem from 1942 to 1945.  They farmed until moving to Hazen in 1950.  They moved to Minot in 1966.  Starting in the fall of 1966 she was a cook at Trinity Homes in Minot, where she worked until her retirement.  Reinhold died in June of 1989.

Loretta continued to reside in Minot until moving to Barb Enney’s Adult Foster Care Home in Burlington, ND.  She enjoyed many cups of coffee with the ladies there.  Thank you Barb!  She moved to the Rock View Good Samaritan Center in Parshall on July 2, 2010.

Loretta was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Minot.  She learned to crochet at age six.  She made intricate Christmas bells, angels and doilies.  She and her daughter Rita attended many craft shows where she displayed her crocheted items.  She loved her flowers and gardening.  She was always ready to play a game of whist and she usually won!  She baked the best kuchen and other German dishes like fleischkueckle, borscht, and kuechla.

Those who shared in her life, Daughters, Rita (Harlan) Johnson, Parshall, ND, and Lucy (Richard) Calavera, Minot; five grandchildren, Jayme (Tiffany) Calavera, Austin (Christina) Calavera, Jordan Calavera, Kirstin Johnson and Dane (Alison) Johnson; two precious great-granddaughters, Leah Marcella Calavera and Julia Taylor Calavera; sisters, Avertia “Dolly” Buchanan, Denver, CO, Lois Schneider, Steele, ND; sisters-in-law, Nina Filibeck, New Salem, ND and Alice Kunkel, Fargo, ND; numerous nieces and nephews.
                     
Loretta was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; grandson, Chad Johnson; brothers, Floyd and Reynold Kunkel; sister, Helen Siems

Memorial Service: Saturday, July 24, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot. 

Visitation: There will be no reviewal, cremation has take place, but friends may sign the register Saturday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

At Loretta’s request her ashes will be spread on the farm south of New Salem.
