Charles O. Shumacher • 1926 - 2005

Charles O. Schumacher, 79, 1605 8th St. NW, Minot, died Tuesday, October 25, 2005 in his home.

Charles Schumacher was born on January 22, 1926, the son of Fred C. and Isabelle (Wilson) Schumacher, in Williston, ND. He was reared and educated in the Williston area, graduating from Williston High School in 1944.

On January 21, 1944 Charles enlisted into the United States Navy. He served on the USS Newberry as a signal man, serving in the Southern Pacific Theater, touring the Philippines, Guadalcanal and Cayman Islands. He was honorably discharged on May 9, 1946. Following his discharge from the Navy, he worked for MDU in Kenmare until 1950.

Charles was united in marriage to Leona Ackerman on July 26, 1950, in Kenmare, ND. He worked on the Great Northern Railroad as a carman in Williston from 1950-1956. They moved to Minot in 1957, where they lived until 1973, when they moved to Whitefish, MT, where he was a foreman on Burlington Northern Railroad. In 1984, he returned to Minot. Leona passed away on April 9, 1992. Charles continued to live in Minot.

He was a member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars Club, and Moose Lodge, all of Minot. He was a 60-year member of the American Legion and was active at the time of his death. He also belonged to the 40 et 8 and held many positions including chef du gare, correspondent, and Grand Chef du gare.

daughters: Paulette (Gene) Nelson, Minot; Mary (Greg) Dodge, Minot; Susan Shoff, Mary Esther, FL; six grandchildren: Jeremy (Teresa) Nelson, Fargo; Jennifer (Isaac) Henjum, Minot; Genea (Fiance Michael Elsberry) Nelson, Grand Forks; Hillary (Robbie) Davidson, Omaha, NE; Heather Dodge and her significant other Coty Dosch, Minot; Andrew Schumacher, Niceville, FL; five great grandchildren: Matthew Nelson, Fargo; Keegan and Annika Henjum, Minot; Tyler Davidson, Omaha, NE; Skylar Dodge, Minot; sisters: Donna (Keith) Gilbert, Williston; Kathryn (Leo) Papineau, Minot; Patricia (Robert) Johnson, Williston; Sharon (Jerry) Frisinger, Dayville, OR.
Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and brothers, Samuel, James, George, Duane and Frederick.

Visitation: Friday, October 28, 2005 from noon until 7:00 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Vigil prayer service: Friday, October 28, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home Chapel, Minot.

Mass of Christian Burial: Saturday, October 29, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Minot.

Burial: Saturday, October 29, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Cemetery, Kenmare, ND
