Lucia G. Schommer 1927 - 2002

Lucia G. Schommer, 75, 1118-9th Ave. Langdon, ND, formerly of Minot, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, in a Velva Care Center.

Lucia was born on April 29, 1927, on a farm in Pierce County, ND, to Michael and Frances (Axtman) Schmaltz. In 1935, she moved with her family to Balta, ND, where she attended the first 4 years of her education. In 1939, they moved to Devils Lake, ND, where she graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1944. She enlisted in the United States cadet nurse program, and received her training at Mercy hospital in Devils Lake. She graduated from nurses training in 1947. She married Anthony Schommer on July 6, 1948, in Devils Lake. He died on November 13, 1986. With World War II ending, she was not required to go on active duty, but she continued to work at Mercy Hospital and raise her family in Devils Lake. While in Devils Lake, she was very active in church and civic organizations. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and served on the Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters of America, where she held various offices including grand regent and district deputy. She organized a chapter of the Catholic Nurses Association, was a member of the Eagles, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Auxiliaries, the District Nurses Association, Girl Scouts of America leader, and was moderator for the Young Ladies Sodality for 7 years. In 1961, the family moved to Minot, where she was a charter member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church and belonged to the Christian Mothers Organization. She worked as a nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital for 7 years, and then at John Moses Air Force Hospital in Minot for over 20 years. Her area of expertise was in labor and delivery and the newborn nursery. She was a long time member of the Great Plains Organization for prenatal care. She was a member of Silver Connections, St. Johns Serra Club. In her retirement, she volunteered at St. Joseph's Hospice and worked at Our Lady of Grace food pantry. She traveled extensively, with the company of her daughter, Patricia, who was 22 years in the Army Nurse Corps, including European Germany, France, England, Austria, Italy, and Hawaii, US.

Survivors: sons, Father Michael Schommer, Langdon, ND, and Greg Schommer (Ann), Minot; daughter, Susan Hoffart (Don), Minot, Patricia Schommer, Tacoma, WA, Mary Larson (John), Benbrook, TX, and Kathryn Lemley (Bob), Dallas, TX; sister, Dorothy Johnson, Phoenix, AZ; brothers, Jerome Schmaltz (Lola), Moorhead, MN, and Tim Schmaltz (Darlene), Andover, MN; 16 grandchildren and 6 great- grandchildren; one step-sister, Ann Ragel, Simi Valley, CA, and one special cousin, Bob Axtman, Grand Forks, ND, who was raised with the family as a young man. He was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a brother, Clem.

Memorials are preferred to the Bishop Ryan High School Foundation, Minot or the St. Alphonsus School Foundation, Langdon.

Funeral: Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Langdon, ND.

Vigil Prayer Service: Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at 7:00 p.m. at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Minot, ND

Visitation: Tuesday, July 2, 2002 from noon to 5:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.

Burial: Friday, July 5, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. at Rosehill memorial Park, Minot, ND
