Melford Arthur Schobinger
1923 - 2004 Melford Arthur Schobinger, 81, Minot, passed away Wednesday, October 13, 2004, in a Minot hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Melford was born March 22, 1923, in St. John's Hospital, Fargo, ND, the son to Hance and Marie Schobinger. He was raised on the family farm near Embden, ND, and was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Embden. Melford graduated from Casselton High School in 1941. Following graduation he worked on the family farm and also worked a short time with the railroad in Minneapolis. Melford married Ardis Thompson in Moorhead, MN on March 22, 1944. He began his trucking career working for Ray Fritz Trucking in Enderlin. In 1947 he started working for Ray Kern Trucking in Fargo, living in Fargo until 1952. He then moved to Miles City, Montana while he worked for Northern Tankline. In June of 1954 the family moved to Glendive, MT, and from there to Williston, ND in 1957. In 1962 the family moved to Minot where Melford was employed with Peter Kiewit Construction building the missile sites. He then worked a short time for Bridgeman Creamery in Minot. In 1965 he started Movers Inc., along with Bob Johnson, working there until he sold it in July 16, 2001. He continued to work part-time for Degelman, and most recently he worked for Kipp Farms. Melford hauled his last load in September 2004. Until his recent illness Melford was busy watching sports, especially the Minnesota Vikings, he kept busy playing cards and bingo, and "supervising" the construction sites around town. He loved to dance. Melford was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Minot, where he was usher for a number of years. He was a member of the Teamsters, Eagles Aerie, the American Legion, and the Crew Cut Club of America. Melford received numerous safe driving awards over the years. Those who shared in his life: His wife of 60 years, Ardis, Minot; children, Janet (Henry) Boe, West Fargo, Jack (Myra) Schobinger, Virginia Beach, VA, Roxy (David) Uhlich, Tioga, Joyce (Myron) Bauer, Green Bay, WI, and Rae (Joel) Hoffer, Minot; 16 grandchildren, Cathy Bachmeier, Gwyn (Corey) Johnson, Melody (Matt) Okke, Kimberly (Steven) Grosz, Jay (Sandra) Schobinger, Randy Schobinger, Patrick (Teri) Schobinger, Nancy (Delvin) Klatt, Tiffany (Robert) Gaydos, Tara (Spencer) Johansen, David (Roxie) Uhlich, Cody (Heidi) Uhlich, Benjamin (Winter) Uhlich, Jennifer (Zac) DeVillers, Philip Bauer, Bridger Hoffer; 26 great-grandchildren, Derek, Jordan, Chris, Cole, Nicolette, Mason, Morgan, Max, Alysha, Tyler, Jacob, Madison, Zane, Jack, Nicholas, Tallon, Brady, Bailey, Gabrielle, Parker, Tyler, Jayden, McKenna, Jordan, Lexi and Rave; sisters-in-law, Virginia Schobinger, Buffalo, ND, and Leona Olson, Leonard, ND; numerous nieces and nephews survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Roslyn Waldahl; brother, Allen Schobinger; brothers-in-law, Gordon Olson, Tom Thompson and Lloyd "Pee Wee" Waldahl; sister-in-law, Lillian Thompson and nephew, Paul Waldahl. Funeral: Saturday, October 16, 2004, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Minot. Visitation: Friday, (today) from noon to 7:00 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot. Family Prayer Service: Friday, October 15, 2004, at 7:00 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND) Burial: Saturday at 4:30 p.m., at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Embden, ND.
