Othmer J. Schmitz 1921 - 2010

Othmer Schmitz PhotoOthmer J. Schmitz, 89, Minot, died Friday, October 1, 2010 in a Louisville Kentucky hospital after a short illness.

Othmer Joseph Schmitz was born on February 10, 1921, a son of Nicholas and Hilda (Gruber) Schmitz on the family farm near Foxholm, ND. He was raised and educated in the Foxholm area. Othmer was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Foxholm. After moving to Minot, he became a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.

On November 30, 1945, Othmer entered the United States Army in Fort Snelling, MN. . He proudly served his country during WWII, and was stationed in the Washington, D.C. area. He was honorably discharged on November 15, 1946.

Othmer was united in marriage to Alice Hull on September 9, 1950 in St. Leo’s Catholic Church, Minot, ND. They resided in Burlington, ND, during the early years of marriage until moving to Minot. Together they had four children: Arlene, Diana, Joanne and Timothy. Alice died January 9, 1976.  He worked for many years for Monarch Products delivering concrete products throughout North Dakota and Montana.

Othmer enjoyed outdoor sports. He was a fisherman and loved both ice fishing and taking his fishing boats to area lakes. He taught all of his children to fish and told many fishing tales along with his fishing buddies. Othmer was known as “Grandpa with the whiskers” to many of his grandchildren and extended family.

During the latter years of life, Othmer was blessed to be able to live in the homes of his children, both in North Dakota and Kentucky.

He is survived by: children: Arlene (Fiancé Dale Mosser) Gagne, Minot, Diana (Michael) Dunn, Fargo, Joanne (Eddy) Squires, Louisville, KY, Tim (Tracey) Schmitz, Minot;  nine grandchildren: Kevin Gagne, Denette Gagne, Alissa (Matt) Walls, Kimberly (Jon) Odegaard, Jennifer (Mark) Moore, Nick Schmitz, Danielle Dunn, Nigel Schmitz and Nolan Schmitz; one great-grandchild on the way; and numerous adopted great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Othmer was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son-in-law Kenny Gange,  brothers, John, Frank, Barney and sisters, Mary Ann Schlag, and Agnes Schmitz.

Visitation: Wednesday, October 6, 2010 from 2-7 at Thompson Larson Funeral Home, Minot

Vigil Prayer Service:  Wednesday, October 7, 2010 at 7 pm at Thompson Larson Funeral Home Chapel, Minot

Mass of Christian Burial: Thursday, October 7, 2010 at 10:30 am at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot

Burial:  Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot
