Philip Schmidt 1917 - 2006

Philip Schmidt, 89, Minot, died Saturday, December 16, 2006 in a Minot nursing home.

Philip was born October 17, 1917 to Peter and Anna (Boechler) Schmidt on his grandfather's farm in Rosebush Township, McHenry County, ND. He was raised and educated in the Karlsruhe area.

He married Magdalena Bohl on January 10, 1944 at St. Anselm's Catholic Church at Fulda, in Jefferson Township, Pierce County, ND. From 1944 to 1958 they farmed in Villard Township just north of Karlsruhe.

They moved to Minot in May of 1958 where Philip worked for Farmers Union, several construction jobs, including the Minot Air Force Base, the building of the Town and Country Mall and work on the Four Bears Bridge, near New Town. He worked for many years as an employee for a Minot area farmer, Morris Anderson, until his retirement.

He was a member of Little Flower Catholic Church, Minot.

Survivors: Wife, Magdalena Schmidt, Minot; sons, James (Joyce) Schmidt, Bismarck, Leonard (Janice) Schmidt, Belfair, WA, Albert Schmidt, Fargo, Gerald Schmidt and Laurie Young, Chadds Ford, PA, Robert Schmidt, Portland, OR, Leo (Jutta) Schmidt, Minot, Anthony Schmidt, Fargo, DeWayne (Denise) Schmidt, Budd Lake, NJ, and Patrick Schmidt, Minot; daughters, Marion (John) Reed, Pamona, MO, Bernadine (William) Humphrey, Tyler, TX, Ann Elkins, Tulsa, OK, Caroline (Philip) Brand, Ringwood, NJ, Clara (Mark) Elenz, Dubuque, IA, Sheila Schmidt, Fargo, and Elizabeth (Travis) Norman, Minot; 27 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; 8 step-great-grandchildren; sisters, Elizabeth Burckhard, Towner, and Ida Burkhardsmeier, Minot; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins survive.

Philip was preceded in death by an infant daughter; his parents; brothers, Benedict and John Schmidt.

Funeral: Thursday, December 21, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at Little Flower Catholic Church, Minot.

Visitation and vigil prayer service: Visitation Wednesday, December 20, 2006, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m., with the vigil prayer service at 5:30 p.m. all at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND.
