Frank J. Schmidt 1917 - 2005

Frank J. Schmidt, 87, 1900 28th St. SW, Minot, ND, died Thursday, April 7, 2005 at Manor Care Healthcare Services.

Frank was born on December 26, 1917, on the family farm in Rosebush Township, McHenry County, near Orrin, ND, the son of Frederick and Theresa (Dettling) Schmidt. He was reared and educated in Rosebush Township and attended Rosebush Country School.

Frank married Magdalen Mary Duchscherer on October 30, 1940 at Orrin, ND. They lived and farmed in Rosebush Township, McHenry County, near Karlsruhe for 37 years, retiring in 1977 and moving to Minot. Magdalen died on February 13, 1985. Frank continued to live in Minot. Frank married Darlene (DesRoches) Ebel on July 25, 1987 in Minot. From 1977 until 1986 he was custodian at the Minot Knights of Columbus. They lived in Minot and she died July 31, 1994 in Minot. Frank continued to live in the family home until several years ago when he moved into Somerset Court in Minot. Frank resided at ManorCare for the last four months.

Frank was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot and was a former member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Karlsruhe. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus where he earned 4th Degree, the Eagles and the Loyal Order of Moose. Frank was a very accomplished woodworker who made crosses, rosaries, wishing wells, stools and many other projects. He was also a very avid gardener, baker and entrepreneur. Frank raised many types of vegetables and made pies and horseradish sauce that he sold all over the community. He was known as the "pie man" in the Minot area. He also made excellent soups and sausage.

Frank is survived by sons, Daniel (Colleen) Schmidt, Rapid City, SD, Richard Schmidt, Bismarck, ND Edward Schmidt, Wilton, ND, Patrick (Karen) Schmidt, Burlington, ND; Gerald Schmidt, Bismarck, ND Victor Schmidt, Columbus, GA, and Jeff (Nancy) Schmidt, Minot, ND; daughters, Ali (Fred) Coleman, Rapid City, SD and Deb (Danny) Seright, Towner, ND. stepdaughters, Diane Morrison, Pauline Hansen, stepsons, Dan Ebel, James Ebel and Charles Ebel; 21 grandchildren, Sandee Esquivel, Rick, Jerry, Allen, Shawn, LeRoy and ElRoy Schmidt Tonya Cressman, Natasha Leach, Gary, Todd, Troy, Greg, Mark, Casey, Matt, Stephanie and Abbie Schmidt, Dustin and Derek Seright, Tiana Coleman,; 17 great-grandchildren, Keista, Carly, Chloe, Lilly, Anna Lee, Gwenyth and Isabelle (Twins), Sydney, Rylie, Chelsey, Kelsey, Carson, Tyler, Zachary, Molly, Ryan, and Justine; sister, Sister Peggy "Margaret" Schmidt OSB, Clyde, Missouri. Frank was preceded in death by his parents, wives, Magdalen and Darlene; brothers, Mike, Peter, and Father Roman Schmidt OSB; sisters, Helen Duchscherer, Gertrude Bischoff, Katherine (Schneibel)Lindeman, Elizabeth Bachmeier, Ida Thomas.

Vigil Prayer Service: Sunday, April 10, 2005 at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot

Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot, ND

Visitation: Sunday, April 10, 2005 from noon until 5 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.
