Cecil Joseph Schmidt 1931 - 2006

Cecil Joseph Schmidt, 74, Minot, died Thursday, February 2, 2006, at his daughter's home in Minot.

He was born on December 24, 1931, at Minot, ND, the son of Lawrence Anthony and Patricia Rose Behm-Schmidt. He was reared in Minot and graduated from St. Leo's Catholic School on May 26, 1949.

Cecil worked at Kresbach's International from 1949 to 1950, as a mechanic. He entered the United States Army in 1951 and worked as a diesel mechanic and motor fleet supervisor at Yuma, AZ and Ft. Churchill, Canada. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1954. After his discharge from the Army Cecil went to work for his father who owned and operated Larry's Diesel Service.

In 1955, Cecil met Adeline Kunkel from Glenburn, ND, and on June 7, 1957, the couple was married in Minot. Cecil attended Minot State Teacher's College and in the evenings worked at the Minot International Airport. He graduated from Minot State Teacher's College in 1961, earning his teaching certificate. He taught science in Berthold, ND and Underwood, ND and then moved to Fargo, ND, where he taught Chemistry for two years at North Dakota State University. Cecil then went to work for the Fargo Public School system where he taught high school. In 1969, they moved to White Shield, ND, where he taught high school science from 1969 to 1975. Cecil always said, "His work in White Shield was his most rewarding." In 1975, due to his disability Cecil retired and moved his family back to Minot.

Cecil enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He had a great smile and wonderful blue eyes that were passed down to many grandchildren. He loved Christmas and is known for his awesome caramel popcorn balls that he made for everyone. He contributed too many charities with his favorite being the God's Child Project.
