Yvonne "Vonnie"
Schmaltz 1937 - 2009 Vonnie was born December 17, 1937, in Rugby, ND. The second of eight children born to Matt and Barbara (Heilman) Hilzendager, she was raised in Pierce County and attended high school in Balta, ND. She married Leo M. Schmaltz February 21, 1955, at St. Anselm's Catholic Church in Fulda, ND. Leo and Vonnie lived on a farm south of Berwick, ND, for the first few years of their marriage. In 1959, they moved to Minot where they raised their five children. Vonnie was a quiet person and kept busy being a mother and homemaker. Her patience was endless. She was an accomplished seamstress who could sew anything she put her mind to. If she saw it, she could make it. When her children were young, she sewed all their clothes and their dolls' clothes. As her daughter's grew, she taught herself how to make prom and wedding attire. When she was blessed with grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she sewed them blankets and clothes, too. Flannel pajamas from Grandma were the best present anyone could get. She enjoyed ceramics, painting, and woodworking, as well as playing Bingo, Cribbage, and Pinochle. To keep herself busy in the winter, she took up crocheting. She made beautiful crocheted gowns complete with accessories for dolls. Her hands were never idle. If she wasn't busy sewing, she was busy cooking, canning or baking. Vonnie was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, the Catholic Order of Foresters, and Christian Mothers. Her strong faith was an important part of her everyday life. After raising her family, she was employed at Bray's Dry Cleaners, Super 8 Lounge, Starlite Club, Cedar Inn, and the Silver Spur. For the past 29 years, Vonnie spent a significant amount of time at Rice Lake. While there she tended her garden, enjoyed Sunday gatherings with her family, and spent time with her friends. Grandma Vonnie genuinely enjoyed having her grandchildren around and they all had many sleepovers at her house. It was always a treat to go with Grandma for coffee and doughnuts in the morning. She had a never-ending smile that always made them feel loved and cherished. She is survived by: her husband of 54 years, Leo, Minot; her mother-in-law, Eva Schmaltz, Rugby; her children, Rosita (Wayne) Schoenberg, Minot, Leo V.
