Thomas R. Schimetz, 66, Minot, died Monday, January 19, 2009 in a Minot hospital.

Thomas was born on November 10, 1942, son of John and Esther (Bakken) Schimetz, in Seattle, WA. He moved with his family to Dunseith, ND and later to Minot where he raised and educated.

On May 10, 1962, he enlisted into the US Army. He proudly served his country until being honorably discharged on April 27, 1964. He then served in the National Guard reserve until 1968.

On August 6, 1966, he was united in marriage to Roberta "Bobbi" Collins in Fargo, ND. Together they had three children Scott, Russ and Cindy. They made their home in Minot, where he worked as a brakeman and eventually as a Conductor for the Great Northern, Burlington Northern and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad. Thomas retired in 2002.

Thomas was active with the railroad Union. He served as local chairman for the UTU, as well as secretary and treasurer. He worked for Courtney LeNeave and Mike Tello law Firms as a representative for the Union lawyers. He was also a member of the VFW and Elks lodge, Minot.

Thomas enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. Thomas and Bobbi wintered in Arizona for the past six years. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Wife Roberta "Bobbi" Schimetz, Minot; sons: Scott Schimetz, Plymouth, MN, Russ Schimetz, Broomfield, CO; daughter: Cindy Schimetz, Minot; six grandchildren: Russell Schimetz, Dustin Schimetz, Jesse Schimetz, Kayce Harris, Jacob Schimetz, and Julie Schimetz; brother: Jerald (Donna) Schimetz, Billings, MT; mother-in-law: Arlaine "Dolly" Collins, Minot; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law Henry Collins and daughter in law, Vicki (Brown) Schimetz.

Visitation: Thursday, January 22, 2009 from noon-7 pm at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot

Funeral Service: Friday, January 23, 2009 at 10:30 am at First Lutheran Church, Minot

Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot
