Edmund A. Schatz • 1927 - 2004 Edmund A. Schatz, 77, Velva, formerly of Butte, ND, died Friday, June 4, 2004, in the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva. Edmund Anton Schatz was born February 12, 1927, in Drake, ND, to Clemence and Margaret (Bartsch) Schatz. He grew up on a farm in the Bergen area and attended country schools through the eighth grade. He helped his parents farm. On September 30, 1947, he married Rose Volk at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Karlsruhe, ND. They lived on the family farm until 1964 when they moved to Butte, ND. Edmund worked at Butte Machine and in 1976, Edmund and his sons Tim and Wayne bought Butte Machine. He worked there until it closed in 1988. He then worked at the ADM plant in Velva from September 1988 until 1990. In 1990 he went to work at the Butte Public School as the custodian, where he worked until his retirement in 1997. In August of 1997 they moved to Velva. Edmund moved into the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva on June 8, 1998. In early years Edmund and Rose enjoyed square dancing. He helped his wife, Rose, with many hobbies, including, ceramics, wood crafts and quilting. Edmund was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Velva, and a former member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Butte, ND, and Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Balfour. He was an honorary lifetime member of the Velva Knights of Columbus for 59 years and was a member of the Wells Aerie Eagles Club in Harvey, ND for 41 years. He served as 4-H Club Leader at Butte, and was a member of the 3 – B’s Square Dance Club, Balfour, Bergen and Butte. He was a lifetime member of the Butte School PTA and served several years as a Butte Public School Board Member. Survivors: Wife, Rose Schatz, Velva; sons, Terry (Becky) Schatz, Williston, Tim (Dodie) Schatz and Wayne (Kathy) Schatz, all of Butte, Vern Schatz, Bismarck; daughters, Sharon Schatz, Dallas Georgia, and Vicky (Jim) Edwards, Minot; mother, Margaret Schatz, Harvey, ND; 13 grandchildren, Jim Schatz, Darren (Jessica) Schatz, Wendy (Johnny) Hoggard, Holly (Rudy) Magcalas, Heather (Patrick) Kippen, Heidi (Rick) Maier, Amy (Blaine) Nechiporenko, Susie (Travis) Franklin, Dustin Schatz, Stephen (Diane) Edwards, Douglas Edwards, Derek and Brandon Schatz; 14 great-grandchildren, Benjamin Schatz, Travis and Trevor Hoggard, Michael and Dylan Thomas, Noah Magcalas, Mikayla Kippen, Austin Schatz, Zachary and Alyssa Franklin, Kira and Cole Nechiporenko, Preston and Brock Edwards; sisters, Bernadine (Jerome) Schiele, Balfour, Florence (Carl) Ziegler, Post Falls, ID, Luella (Albert) Vetter and Leona (Emanuel) Volk, all of Martin, ND, Linda (Curt) Joern, Harvey; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Edmund was preceded in death by his father, Clemence Schatz in 1988. Funeral Mass: Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva, ND. Visitation and vigil prayer service: Visitation Monday, June 7, 2004, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., with the vigil prayer service at 7:00 p.m., all at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva, ND.
