Anna M. Dostert Schan 1919 - 2009
Anna
M. Dostert Schan, 90, Minot, died Friday, May 1, 2009 in a Minot
Medical Center.
Anna was born on April 11, 1919, in Foxholm Township, Ward County,
ND, the daughter of Anthony N. and Rosena (Schmitz) Dostert.
She graduated from Lone Tree High School in 1936. She attended
Minot State Teacher s College and received a standard degree
in 1940. Anna taught in country consolidated and town schools
in North Dakota for eight years.
Anna married John J. Schan on July 3, 1944 in Foxholm, ND. John
was in the United States Marine Corps and for a time they lived
near Camp Pendleton in California. While John served overseas,
Anna returned to North Dakota. After the war, Anna and John operated
a grocery store in Blaisdell, ND and on October 30, 1946, their
son, John Anthony. was born.
In 1950, the family moved to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, where Anna
taught in a parochial school. She returned to college and received
a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Idaho in
1968 and a Master of Arts Degree in Elementary Education in 1978.
She then continued teaching at Sherman and Winston Schools, retiring
in 1981. Her husband, John J. died in 1977.
She went on to volunteer in many areas, most notably at the local
hospital for 14 years. Her son John died in February of 2003.
In January 2008, Anna returned to Minot and resided at A and
P Adult Foster Care, where she was loved and cared for by Patti
Backes and Alice Lizotte.
Anna attended St. Pius Catholic Church in Coeur d'Alene, where
she taught CCD classes and was a 31 year member of The Catholic
Daughters of the Americas. She was very involved in the National
Retired Teachers Association. She served as State President for
the local Business and Professional Women's Organization. Anna
enjoyed traveling to conventions for her many committee involvements
over the years.
Anna is survived by brothers, Joseph (Patricia) Dostert, Minot;
Raymond Dostert, Minot and Edwin Dostert, Burlington, ND; sisters,
Catherine Opland, Kent, WA, Patricia Lesmeister, Surrey, ND and
Irene Dostert, Minot, ND; brother-in-law, Richard Novak, Minot,
ND; sister-in-law, Rosamond Schan, Minot. Many nieces and nephews
also survive.
Anna was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Schan; son,
John A. Schan; brother, Anthony Dostert, sisters, Bernice Novak
and Frances Price; brothers-in-law, Walter Opland, Wilbert Price
and Wendelin Lesmeister, sister-in-law, Lucille Dostert; parents
Anthony and Rosena Dostert and her mother and father-in-law.
Funeral will be at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church,
Minot on Monday, May 1, 2009 at 11 a.m..
Visitation will be on Monday one hour prior to the
service in the church.
Burial will be at St. Thomas Cemetery, Coeur D'Alene on
Friday, May 8, 2009 at 1 p.m.
Visitation will be on Friday, May 8, 2009 from 11 a.m.
until service time at the Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d'Alene,
ID.
