Paul Schalesky 1930 - 2010

Paul Schalesky Photo olderPaul Schalesky, 80, Minot, ND, formerly of Sawyer, ND, died Sunday, August 1, 2010, in his home.

Paul Jacob Schalesky was born on May 31, 1930, on the old farmstead about 10 miles SW of Max, ND, in McLean County, the son of Jacob “Jake” and Ruth (Claussen) Schalesky.  He was raised in the Max and Sawyer areas. His mother, Ruth, passed away when he was a young boy. At the age 14, he went out on his own doing just about any kind of work he could.  He was driving semi trucks before he was 19 years old.  With the help of a friend, he then got his license to drive truck. He hauled everything from culverts, to oil, to pop, and grain. He never took a drivers test, but he could drive anything.  He could also fix anything and he was as strong as an ox, as he could lift an engine block out of a car with his bare hands.  He was always fixing cars because he could never afford to buy a new one.  In his later years, he could and did buy just about any kind of car he wanted.

It was at a dance that Paul met his future wife, Beverly Rhodes. He said, “I’m going to marry that girl”,Paul Schalesky newer photo and he did.  They were united in marriage November 16, 1949, in Minot.  They lived in various cities across North Dakota due to Paul’s oil field jobs.  In 1959, they made their home in Sawyer, where he began working for Consol Coal Mines south of Velva.  Together they raised their two daughters and three sons.  He retired from Consol Coal Mines in 1987 after nearly 20 years.

Following his retirement, they enjoyed traveling to spend time with their family.  They moved back to Minot in 1992, where he had continued to reside since.  Beverly passed away May 19, 2007, after nearly 60 years of marriage. Paul missed her everyday and said many times that he was ready to be with her again. He wanted to pass away at home, and on Sunday, August 1, 2010, he got his wish. Now he has left us, but we know he’s back with mom where he wanted to be. God bless you dad.
