Marcellus W. "Marce"
Schaefer 1922 - 2005 Marcellus W. "Marce" Schaefer, 83, Minot, formerly of Glenburn, died Monday, November 21, 2005, in a Minot hospital. Marcellus was born February 1, 1922, on the family farm near Glenburn, ND, the son of Fred and Anna (Lux) Schaefer. He was raised in the Glenburn area and attended St. Leo's High School in Minot, where he graduated in 1938. He attended Mankato Commercial College and graduated in 1940. On June 5, 1944 Marcellus married Lois Elaine Hedberg in Minot. Following their marriage they farmed for a short time at Sawyer and Glenburn. Marcellus entered the United States Army and served during World War II. Upon his discharge from the service the couple moved to the Glenburn area where they farmed and ranched until moving to Minot in 1980. Since the early 80's Lois and Marce enjoyed spending the winters in Mesa, AZ. Lois died on August 19, 1989. While in Glenburn Marcellus was a member of St. Philomena Catholic Church, where he served as trustee and also on the building committee for several years. Marce was a member of the American Legion Post #280, Glenburn. He served on the Renville Bottineau Agriculture Improvement Association, and the Ensign Township Board, where he was assessor from 1958 to 1961. He was the Renville County Commissioner from 1961 to 1962, and was a board member of the Farmers Independent Grain Company. He served with the North Dakota Crop Improvement Association in Renville County and in 1975 was in the book "Who's Who in North Dakota." For many years he was active with the Glenburn School Board and served as board president. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America from 1964 to 1970. He was a former member of the Elks Lodge and Eagle's Aerie, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Moose Club. Marce and Lois received the Renville County Soil Conservation Award in 1954. Since moving to Minot in 1980 he was a member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Minot. Marce cherished his family and the times they spent together at their lake cabin at Lake Metigoshe. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and reading. Survivors: Son, Dan (Mary) Schaefer, Glenburn; daughters, Julie (Kurt) Stein, Arden Hills, MN, and Brenda Jo (David) Carlson, Lake Elmo, MN; six grandchildren, Robert, Marie and Michael Schaefer, Angela Stein and Kurt Stein, Jr., and Brock Carlson; sisters, LaVera Kraig, Aberdeen, SD, Agnes Parkinson, Arlington, WA, Kathryn Frei, Lewiston, ID, and Therese Haverkamp, Greenbrae, CA; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Marcellus was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Elaine Schaefer; son, Jerrell Mark Schaefer; one infant daughter; his parents, Fred and Anna Schaefer; brothers, Francis, John, Raymond and Matthew Schaefer. Funeral: Friday, November 25, 2005, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Philomena Catholic Church, Glenburn, ND. Visitation and vigil prayer service: Was held Wednesday, November 23, 2005, from noon to 7:00 p.m. with the vigil at 7:00 all at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.
