Carl T. Sand 1925 - 2011

Carl Sand PhotoCarl T. Sand, 86, Minot, ND, died Tuesday, September 6, 2011, ManorCare Health Services in Minot.  

Carl Toralf Sand was born August 5, 1925, a son of Tory and Carrie (Carlsten) Sand, on the family farm located in Afton Township of Ward County, south of Minot, ND. He was raised on the family farm and educated at Frost School #2. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He assisted his father with the operation of the family farm until the age of 15, when his father passed away. He then assisted his mother with the operation of the family farm.

Carl married Helen (Schneider) Dyste August 10, 1962, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minot. They made their home on the Sand family farm, where he continued to farm and raise livestock and chickens until the 1990s, when he retired. In 1965, he started working for Minot Livestock. He worked as a cattle buyer, truck driver, and a dispatcher until it closed. Most recently, he worked for Northern Livestock for the past several years. Carl and Helen continued to reside on the family farm until 2009, when they moved into Minot.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge, where he served as Governor, the Afton Township 4-H Club, and NODAK Race Club.

He enjoyed showing his Belgium Horses at the North Dakota State Fair Parade and his restored tractors at the Makoti Threshing Show.

His loving family includes:  wife of 49 years, Helen, Minot; step-son, David Dyste, Lawrenceville, GA; sons, Larry (Tammy) Thom, Minot, and Brad (Dawn) Thom; daughter-in-law, Susan Dyste, Phoenix, AZ;10 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; brother, Arnold Sand, Minot; sister, Evelyn Chambers, Minot; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; step-son, Bernard Dyste; and sisters, Olive Nicolaison and Palma Schoenwald.

Funeral: Saturday, September 10, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot.

Interment:
  Wednesday, September 14, at 10:00 a.m. at Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND.

Visitation: 
Friday from 2 to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

: are preferred to Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot, or an organization of the donor’s choice.
